EUGENE, Ore. – The No. 2 ranked Oregon softball team took both games in a doubleheader with Utah Valley on Wednesday. The Ducks won the first game, 9-1, in six innings and the second game, 3-0, in seven.
The Ducks improved to 28-3 with the doubleheader sweep while the Wolverines slipped to 12-22. Oregon has won 12 straight games since falling to No. 1 Florida on March 6.
Game 1: Utah Valley struck first, with a solo home run in the second, but starting pitcher Geri Ann Glasco was lights out after that. The junior righty struck out a season-high 10 batters while allowing just one run on two hits and two walks.
After the second inning home run, Glasco helped herself out with a solo home run to left field to start the scoring for the Ducks. Oregon scored two more runs in the inning and took a 3-1 lead to the fourth.
Alyssa Gillespie hit a solo shot to left field to make it a 4-1 lead for the Ducks before Oregon scored five runs in the sixth to run-rule the Wolverines.
Jenna Lilley hit a RBI single in the sixth and then, with the bases loaded, Hailey Decker crushed a grand slam over the scoreboard in right to give the Ducks a 9-1 lead and put the eight-run rule into effect.
Glasco picked up the win, improving to 6-0 on the season, while going 2-for-2 at the plate.
Game 2: Oregon's pitchers had another strong showing in the second game of the doubleheader. Karissa Hovinga and Jasmine Smithson-Willett combined to toss a shutout with six hits and just one walk allowed.
Hovinga drew the start and shut UVU down for five innings. She tallied four strikeouts while allowing five hits. With the win, Hovinga improved to 7-1 on the season.
Smithson-Willett earned her first save of the year after tossing scoreless sixth and seventh innings with three strikeouts.
Oregon scored just three runs in the game, with the first coming on a Janelle Lindvall sacrifice fly in the first. Geri Ann Glasco doubled later in the inning to score Janie Takeda. The Ducks got another run in the third when Lindvall's sharp liner bounced off the pitcher and away from the defense allowing Lilley to run home from third.
Up Next: Oregon hosts No. 19 ranked Washington at Howe Field for a three-game Pac-12 series starting Friday. All three games will be live on Pac-12 Networks.
