Ducks Complete Road Sweep with 4-0 Win Over Utah
04/12/15 | Men's Tennis
SALT LAKE CITY – No. 56 Oregon pulled off the Pac-12 road sweep Sunday afternoon by beating Utah 4-0 in Salt Lake City. The Ducks won the doubles point and never trailed in what was their first road win against the Utes since they joined the Pac-12 in 2012.
How It Happened: For the second match in a row, Oregon began the day with an exceptional performance in doubles, this time via two 6-1 wins on courts two and three. Cormac Clissold and Jayson Amos were the victors at the No. 2 spot, and Joey Swaysland teamed with Brent Chin at No. 3 to clinch the opening point for UO.
Amos earned his 21st singles win of the year with relative ease when he got the best of Utah's Santiago Sierra 6-2, 6-1 on court four, making it a 2-0 Duck lead.
Daan Maasland moved to 4-2 in conference play after handling Cedric Willems to a tune of 6-3, 6-1 at the No. 1 spot. Maasland's victory means he joins Amos in the 20-win club (20-8).
Swaysland earned his second singles victory of the weekend and provided the match-clincher for the Ducks after he defeated the Utes' Louis Phillippe Gasc 7-5, 6-1 on court six to seal the 4-0 decision for Oregon.
The other three singles matches were forfeited, but both Daniel Sardu and Clissold were within a point of winning their respective matches. Sardu led 6-4, 5-2 over Parker McGuiness at No. 2 and actually was up 40-15 in the last game when UO secured the win, and Clissold was extremely close at 6-4, 5-2 against Jamey Swaggart on court five.
Simon Stevens was in a 5-7, 3-3 competitive match of his own when play was stopped at No. 3.
Rock Solid: The Ducks were a perfect 2-0 in doubles and only dropped one set in singles play. The three singles victories came in straight sets, and UO earned their first 4-0 sweep since beating Pacific on March 23 (7-0).
Big Sweep: Pac-12 wins are hard to come by, and the Ducks did well to pick two of them up on the road. The two wins mark the first time the Ducks have swept a Pac-12 road series since Schyllander took over in 2007. It is also the first Pac-12 sweep – of any kind – since 2012.
Quotable: Head Coach Nils Schyllander
“Our guys did a great job this weekend. They battled really hard after dropping two really close matches last weekend. It's great to bounce back, and I'm very impressed with our group right now.”
Next Up: Oregon will close out the regular season next weekend when they take on Washington on Saturday, April 18 at 2 p.m. at the Student Tennis Center. The home match will be the last for Duck seniors Daniel Sardu and Joey Swaysland.
