EUGENE, Ore. - It was a banner afternoon at Howe Field, as history was made in multiple ways during the No. 2 Oregon softball team's 8-0 victory over No. 9 Louisiana. Outfielder Janie Takeda became the Ducks' all-time leader in hits and stolen bases, and Nikki Udria hit a walk-off home run to clinch a five-inning no-hitter for UO pitcher Cheridan Hawkins.
How It Happened: Oregon (39-5) used a five-run second inning to break the game open. With one out and the bases loaded, Udria drove a ball up the middle that caromed off Louisiana pitcher Jordan Wallace and resulted in a two-run infield single. Takeda followed with her school-record 289th career hit to make it 3-0, and on the next pitch she stole her UO record 97th career base. Jenna Lilley drove in Udria and Takeda, and the Ducks were rolling.
Hawkins (21-3) pitched around walks in the first and fourth innings, tying her season high with 11 strikeouts to record her sixth career no-hitter. Lilley hit a two-run home run in the fourth to put Oregon ahead 7-0, and Udria ended the game with her two-out solo shot in the fifth.
What It Means: This series has all the flavor of an NCAA Super Regional weekend, with two top-10 teams facing off for three games in two days. The Ducks are on a break from Pac-12 play, but they maintained their momentum and knocked off the Ragin' Cajuns (34-6).
Quotable
Janie Takeda, senior outfielder
On her school records
"The home crowd cheering for me, it was just a warm feeling playing in front of my community. I'm just really thankful for my team, keeping me grounded all these years. Just really humbled by it."
Nikki Udria, sophomore shortstop
On playing with Takeda
"I think Oregon takes pride in the type of player Janie is. She full-on encompasses what an Oregon female athlete is. I'm just proud she's on our team and I get to play with her. It's been a joy, not only to watch her as a player but to get to know her. She's a great person, comes from a great family, so I'm truly honored to get to play with and learn from her."
Mike White, UO coach
On Saturday's doubleheader
"We're treating this like a Super Regional, and that's what we need to do. We cannot let down. That team can jump right back up tomorrow and beat us twice. We know that. That's part of the game; tomorrow's a new day and we've got to bring it again tomorrow. We expect them to come out hard, and we have to as well."
Fun Fact: Going back to her two appearances last week at Stanford, Hawkins has 31 strikeouts over her last 15 2/3 innings.
Up Next: The Ducks and Ragin' Cajuns wrap up the series with a doubleheader Saturday at Howe Field beginning at noon.
