EUGENE, Ore. — Entering a month in which every win will be crucial for Oregon's postseason hopes, the Ducks set the tone with a 7-3 series-opening victory over Stanford on Friday at PK Park.
How It Happened: The Ducks staked starter Cole Irvin to an early lead, as Mitchell Tolman had an RBI triple and scored on an infield out for a 2-0 lead in the first. Oregon (26-19, 8-11 Pac-12) loaded the bases on three walks in the second and made it 3-0 when Nick Catalano walked to force in a run, before Tolman drove in two more with a single.
An RBI double by Mark Karaviotis made it 6-0 for the Ducks in the third. They would tack on an insurance run in the seventh by loading the bases for pinch hitter Matt Eureste, whose infield single drove in Oregon's final run of the evening.
Irvin (2-4) sailed into the sixth, when the Cardinal (19-24, 5-14) loaded the bases on three singles to open the inning. Two runs came home on outs and a third scored on another single, but Irvin ended the rally and then retired the side in the seventh. Oregon's dominant back end of Stephen Nogosek and Garrett Cleavinger pitched a scoreless inning apiece to close it out.
"It looked like a Duck Friday night victory in character," UO coach George Horton said. "Not an inordinate amount of hits, but efficient offense and timely hitting. If we can maintain that, we got a chance to win a few games, I think."
The Straw That Stirs The Drink: Tolman went 2-for-3 with a run scored and three RBIs, making him 8-of-14 with four runs and five RBIs over his last four games. Since his average sunk to .270 in the second game of Oregon's series with Michigan State on April 4, Tolman is 20-of-45 (.444) with 10 runs, 11 RBIs and seven extra-base hits.
"I've been feeling good at the plate lately; just slowing things down and trying to see the ball well, and I feel like it's paid off lately," Tolman said. "My first two years here I always loved coming up to the plate with guys in scoring position, and early this year I got away from it and tried to do too much sometimes. It was exciting today."
Irvin Shines Under Friday Night Lights: After scuffling through his last two outings, Irvin went seven innings against the Cardinal, allowing seven hits, three runs and a walk with five strikeouts. He said he struggled with the feel for his off-speed pitches early, yet even Stanford's sixth-inning rally only featured one really well-hit ball.
"I kept command of the zone and doing what I normally do, which is command my pitches," Irvin said. "I finally found the curveball, finally found the slider. Just was happy that offense showed up in the early innings, and was excited to put up a zero after that."
Up Next: The Ducks and Cardinal play game two of the series Saturday at 2 p.m., following the UO football team's Spring Game.
