SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The Oregon women's golf team recorded their lowest three-day score at an NCAA Regional in school history after a 2-under 286 in the third round at Briggs Ranch GC, good for a tournament total of 865 (1-over). The Ducks finished in eighth place and did not qualify to the NCAA Championships, but their 865 was their best performance at a regional by 20 strokes, surpassing their previous high of 885 that they shot on two occasions in 1993 and 1997.
Cathleen Santoso led the way for UO in San Antonio and finished in a tie for 23rd place (216, 74-71-71) after a 1-under 71 in the final round. Her 216 is the fourth-lowest individual score in school history at a regional.
Record Setting Season: The Ducks shattered their previous team season scoring average school record that was set last year (298.61) with a 292.66 this year, breaking last season's mark by almost six strokes.
Individually, Caroline Inglis wraps up the season with a 72.31 scoring average, giving her the lowest single season scoring average in school history.
Third Round Scores: Marcella Pranovia came up huge for the Ducks today and carried the torch with a 4-under 68 – the lowest round of her career. After playing a clean front nine that featured eight pars and one birdie, the sophomore exploded for a 3-under 33 on the back side that featured an eagle and two more birdies.
Santoso carded her second-straight 1-under 71 behind another sound 18 that saw her pick up a birdie on each side with just one bogey on the fifth hole.
Inglis matched Santoso with a 1-under 71 of her own, highlighted by a hole-in-one on No. 15 that put her under par for the day. The Pac-12 Champion improved in every round (75-74-71) over the course of the tournament.
Cassy Isagawa closed with a 4-over 76. She rallied for an even-par 36 on the back, but a pair of bogeys and a double on the front kept her from a low score.
Kelsey Ulep finished with a 7-over 79.
Baylor won the regional with a 22-under 842 (280-281-281) and Baylor's Hayley Davis won the individual title with a 7-under 200 (67-68-65).
Exciting Finish: Along with battling for the sixth and final team qualifying spot, the Ducks saw a couple of sensational shots take place in the final six holes of the third round.
Without a doubt, the first came when Inglis enjoyed a hole-in-one on the 153-yard par-3 15th, giving the local Eugene native her fifth career hole-in-one.
Pranovia's career day was fueled by finishing 4-under in the final six holes. The sophomore eagled the par-5 13th, and then birdied No. 14 and 17 (chipped in on No. 17) on her way to the lowest round of the day for UO.
Final Marks: After Santoso's tie for 24th, Ulep was right behind with a tie for 26th with a 1-over 217 (69-69-79). Inglis finished strong to tie for 46th thanks to a 4-over 220 (75-74-71), Isagawa closed with a 7-over 223 (T58th, 73-74-76) and Pranovia made up a ton of ground in the final day to tie for 68th at 10-over (226, 81-77-68).
Eagles: As incredible as Oregon's three eagles over the course of the tournament were, two other teams – Baylor and UCLA – were able to finish with three eagles as well, tying for the most in the tournament.
Low-Scoring Regional: With seven teams finishing under par at the end of three rounds, the San Antonio Regional saw the lowest scores in the country by a landslide. The weather and conditions varied at each regional, but the winners of the other three (Raleigh Regional – South Carolina (+13), St. George Regional – USC (+24) and South Bend Regional – Duke (+9)) were all well above par.
Quoatable: Head Coach Ria Scott
“Three rounds under par and a career-low round from Marcella was extremely solid today. It was a great season as a whole – and our finish this week certainly was not indicative of how successful it was.”
“We are extremely proud of each and every one of our players. I know that this team is already hungry for next year.”
Marcella Pranovia – Sophomore
“It was good to come back with a low round after the first day, and it's also a great way to finish the season. Unfortunately the team didn't make it to nationals, but we all learned a lot and are ready to come back next year strong.”
