HOW IT HAPPENED: Sharp outside shooting from the Ducks (11-5, 0-5) kept them out in front for nearly the entire game but Stanford (14-3, 4-1) was able to hold Oregon scoreless for over four minutes down the stretch. Then in the final minute, Thompson scored lay-ups on back-to-back drives from the left side of the court. The first one tied the game up at 62-all with 35 seconds to play. A missed jumper from Lexi Petersen gave the Cardinal back the ball and Thompson scored the go-ahead basket. A last ditch three-point attempt from Kat Cooper bounced off the rim and Stanford was able to avoid the upset on the road.
From the start, Oregon was able to find the open player and get clean looks at the basket, something that has been hard to come by for the team since conference play began.
Lexi Bando and Petersen, who were a combined 5-of-25 from behind the arc in Pac-12 games coming into tonight, each sunk a three early on in the first quarter. That set the tone as the Ducks hit 12 three-pointers for the game, eight of which came from Bando and Petersen.
The sharp shooting allowed UO to stymie the runs made by Stanford and maintain a lead throughout the second half. The Cardinal used two late baskets in the third to cut the lead to four but a three-pointer from Bando to start the fourth quarter put the Ducks back in the seven-point lead.
Stanford continued to fight back and eventually used a 5-0 run to cut the deficit to two until Bando hit another three at the five minute mark. After that, the Oregon offense went cold and the Cardinal were able to get four baskets to take the lead for the first time since the 7:40 mark of the first quarter.
"I think we've shown that we can play with anybody," head coach Kelly Graves said. "But we have to close the deal. There were ten chances in the last five minutes that we could have iced it and we didn't. That's the bottom line."
For the game, Petersen led the team with 17 points and Bando knocked down five three's en route to scoring 15 points. Jillian Alleyne led the team in rebounding, grabbing 14 boards, seven of which came on the offensive end.
POSTGAME NOTEBOOK: Oregon sunk 12 three-pointers tonight, two more than it had made in the previous four games combined … The UO bench outscored Stanford's 17-4 for the game. Liz Brenner and Jordan Loera contributed 14 of those 17 points … The Cardinal outscored the Ducks 32-12 in the paint, while Oregon knocked down twice as many three-pointers as Stanford … Bando was five-of-seven from behind the arc. Her five makes were one short of her career high of six, which she hit earlier this year against San Jose State (Nov. 30).
UP NEXT: The Ducks will host California at 2 p.m. Sunday at Matthew Knight Arena.
