
Ducks Win Doubleheader to Open Season

Eugene, Ore. – The Oregon men's tennis team made it 13-straight season openers when they defeated Seattle U, 6-1, Saturday morning and then followed that up with a 7-0 sweep over the Redhawks in the afternoon.
Match 1: Oregon showed its strength in doubles, sweeping the Redhawks in all three matches. Daan Maasland and Simon Stevens easily won 6-1 at No. 2 over Matt Alderson and Connor Leahy. Bartosz Sawicki and Cormac Clissold then clinched the first point of the match in UO's favor, winning 6-3 over Mike Schoettler and Jeremiah Kalmus at No. 3. Jayson Amos and Armando Soemarno completed the sweep in a battle at No. 1. The duo took the match 6-3 over John Stormans and Tanner Berkabile.
In singles, the Ducks had four straight-set wins starting with Daan Maasland easily putting away Stormans 6-1, 6-1 at No. 1. Thomas Laurent then recorded his first career win at No. 2 as he defeated Ian Clare 6-1, 6-3. Jayson Amos secured the fourth point of the match, winning 6-0, 6-2 at No. 4 over Alderson. Simon Stevens won 6-2, 6-3 at No. 3 over Tanner Berkabile.
The final two matches at No. 5 and 6 ended in exciting fashion. Armando Soemarno captured the first set at No. 5 6-4, however his opponent, Mike Schoettler, came back to force a tiebreak by taking the second set 6-2. The tiebreak was back-and-forth as Soemarno held the 6-2 lead early. Schoettler came back with three straight points and eventually tied it up at 7-all. From there, there would be two more ties at 8- and 9-all, but Soemarno closed out the match by winning the final two points to take the breaker 11-9.
On court 6, Ethan Young-Smith came back to win his first set 6-3 over Connor Leahy but the Redhawk rebounded to win the second set 6-3. In the tiebreak, Young-Smith only led after the opening point but the freshman tied it up four more times before eventually falling 10-8. It was the only point that Seattle U would score in the match.
Match 2: The Ducks looked even sharper in doubles in the second match of the day. Bartosz Sawicki and Cormac Clissold won 6-1 over Jeremiah Kalmus and Brian Nguyen at No. 3 and Daan Maasland and Simon Stevens quickly followed suit with a 6-1 victory of their own over Matt Alderson and Tanner Berkabile. Jayson Amos and Armando Soemarno completed the sweep with a 6-2 win at No. 2 over John Stormans and Connor Leahy.
In singles, Thomas Laurent moved up to No. 1 and was nothing short of dominant as he blanked Stormans 6-0, 6-0. Simon Stevens followed that up with a 6-1, 6-1 victory at No. 3 over Alderson and Bart Sawicki scored the fourth Duck point with his 6-0, 6-3 win over Kalmus at No. 5.
The final three matches all ended with 6-2, 6-2 scores in favor of Oregon. Maasland downed Ian Clare at No. 2 while Ethan Young-Smith beat Gus Orlando at No. 6 Cormac Clissold then rounded out the match with a victory over Tanner Berkabile at No. 4.
UP NEXT: Oregon will face its first ranked opponent of the season on Monday when it plays host to No. 54 UC Santa Barbara at 11 a.m.
