Ducks Knock Off No. 30 Virginia Tech 4-1
01/24/16 | Women's Tennis
LUBBOCK, Texas – The Oregon women's tennis team defeated 30th-ranked Virginia Tech, 4-1, Sunday on the second day of the ITA Kick-Off Weekend. The win was the Ducks' first over a top-30 opponent since taking down 20th-ranked Washington in 2011.
How It Happened: The Ducks were winners on doubles courts two and three to seal the doubles point and take an early 1-0 lead. Oregon's Kennan Johnson and Christi Woodson got the Ducks' first win of the day, taking down Hokies Raluca Mita and Kelly Williford, 6-1, on No. 2. Marlou Kluiving and Shweta Sangwan captured the point for Oregon with a 6-2 victory over Elena Cerezo-Codina and Caroline Daxhelet in the third doubles spot.
In singles, Johnson was the first Duck to snag a win, knocking off 104th-ranked Ilinca Stoica, 7-5, 7-5, in the No. 1 position to give Oregon a 2-0 lead.
The Hokies would get on the board after Sangwan fell, 7-5, 6-2, on No. 3 to Cerezo-Codina, but the Ducks earned wins on courts four and five to clinch their first dual win of the season.
Alyssa Tobita expanded the Oregon lead back to two by taking down 108th-ranked Daxhelet of Virginia Tech, 6-4, 7-6(3), on No. 4. It was Kluiving that dealt the final blow to the Hokies on court five, winning in three sets over Williford, 6-4, 4-6, 6-1.
From Coach Silverio: “It was a great opportunity to compete at the ITA Kick-Off. We came out tentative the first day and did not convert during the pressure points. Today, we performed better in the pressure situations. It was a hard-fough battle and as a team we capitalized on our opportunity.”
What It Means: The Oregon women's tennis team bounced back in a big way Sunday after Saturday's tough loss to 17th-ranked Texas Tech. After posting the highest-ranked win in the Alison Silverio era, the Ducks will surely be playing with a burst of confidence when they suit up to play Idaho in next weekend's home opener.
Up Next: Fans can get their first look at the Ducks when the team returns to Eugene to host Idaho at the Student Tennis Center this Saturday at noon.
