Rotation Expands In Win Over Western Oregon
11/30/16 | Men's Basketball
Dana Altman was able to get extended minutes for some newcomers in Wednesday's 93-54 victory for the Oregon men.
EUGENE, Ore. — The Oregon men's basketball team took care of business Wednesday against Western Oregon, beating the Wolves 93-54 before 6,138 in Matthew Knight Arena.
How It Happened: UO coach Dana Altman used the game to spread around minutes and get extended looks at some new players. Junior college transfer Kavell Bigby-Williams got the start at center, and freshman Keith Smith was on the floor to open the second half.
The Ducks (6-2) shared the ball better off the bat than they did in Monday's narrow win over Boise State. The first six field goals were provided by five different players, the last a Dillon Brooks' jumper for a 12-2 lead. Brooks, who bounced back from an off night Monday, completed a three-point play for a 26-9 advantage, and back-to-back threes by Jordan Bell and Roman Sorkin late in the half helped the Ducks take a 48-20 lead into the break.
After scoring the last 11 points of the first half, the Ducks scored the first seven after halftime for an 18-0 run. Brooks capped that run by driving the lane for an emphatic, two-handed slam dunk to make the score 55-20. Tyler Dorsey's three-pointer pushed the lead to 79-31 with 6:48 left, and another Brooks three-point play gave Oregon its biggest lead at 86-35 moments later.
Who Stood Out: Brooks finished with a season-high 21 points on 8-of-13 shooting, after missing his first seven shots and finishing with five points Monday. Sorkin scored a career-high 15, including an alley-oop dunk in the waning minutes. Chris Boucher finished with 14 points and eight rebounds, Bell had eight points and a season-high 12 rebounds, and Bigby-Williams finished with five points and 10 boards.
What It Means: All 10 available scholarship players scored, and each played at least 18 minutes. Altman now has extended film to break down of guys like Bigby-Williams, Smith and Sorkin, and can evaluate how best to employ them in the rotation during the remaining five nonconference games in December.
Quotable:
Head coach Dana Altman
On what he wanted to see
"We needed to get out and just move the ball and run some stuff. I thought our intensity was pretty good. We cut down on some turnovers (seven), which was good. We obviously tried to get everybody involved. So I think it was a good step for us."
Junior forward Roman Sorkin
On taking advantage of his opportunities
"It was really good for me. I felt great, made some shots my teammates set up for me. … Every time I step on the court, I feel like if take an open shot I can make it. Just let the game come to me, and when my teammates got me the ball, make the shot."
Up Next: The Ducks continue the current six-game homestand when the host Savannah State on Saturday (3 p.m. PT, Pac-12 Network).
