Brooks' Three Beats No. 2 Bruins
12/28/16 | Men's Basketball
Dillon Brooks hit a three-pointer in the final second as No. 21 Oregon knocked off No. 2 UCLA on Wednesday.
EUGENE, Ore. — Dillon Brooks hit a three-pointer with 2 seconds left to help the Oregon men's basketball team open Pac-12 play with an 89-87 win over No. 2 UCLA on Wednesday, handing the Bruins their first loss of the season and extending the Ducks' home win streak to 34 games before a soldout crowd of 12,364 in Matthew Knight Arena.
How It Happened: The Ducks (12-2, 1-0 Pac-12) led much of the night, but were in danger of losing Wednesday after an extended cold stretch in the second half. Brooks hit a jumper with 14:12 to play for a 63-57 lead, but Oregon went 7:57 before its next field goal and fell behind 75-67. The Bruins (13-1) put together a 15-0 run during that stretch, including three straight three-pointers by Lonzo Ball at one point.
It was 82-74 inside the final 4 minutes when Oregon's desperate comeback bid began. Chris Boucher hit a three-pointer, Brooks put back a Dylan Ennis miss and — after a UCLA free throw — Payton Pritchard drove for a layin to get the Ducks within 83-81. It was 87-83 when Pritchard, the freshman point guard from West Linn, nailed a three-pointer to make it a one-point game with 12.9 seconds left. The Ducks fouled UCLA's Bryce Alford, who missed the front end of a one-and-one, and Brooks coolly drilled the game winner with 0.8 seconds left.
Oregon led 52-47 at the half, failing to put the sort of defensive pressure on UCLA the Ducks had hoped but coming out ahead in an back-and-forth half. The Bruins were able to shoot 18-of-32 (.563) but the Ducks shot 19-of-35 (.543) and had just four turnovers at halftime. Ball hit a bucket for the Bruins to get UCLA within 36-34, but the Ducks got separation with a 13-3 run capped by a three-point play and then another field goal by Brooks.
Who Stood Out: Brooks finished with a game-high 23 points, making 9-of-20 field goals and grabbing nine rebounds. He was 1-of-7 from three-point range before hitting the game-winner. Pritchard added 15 points with nine assists, Jordan Bell scored 13 with seven rebounds and Tyler Dorsey (11) and Ennis (10) also scored in double figures. Boucher added nine points with seven rebounds.
What It Means: The preseason Pac-12 favorites suddenly look very deserving of that designation despite struggling in the opening few weeks of the season. Oregon's win in the Pac-12 opener was its 10th straight overall this season.
Quotable:
Head coach Dana Altman
On Brooks hitting the game winner
"Dillon likes those big moments. Hit or miss, he's willing to take the consequences for it. It's just nice to see him healthy and enjoying the game. It's been a long five months for him (since foot surgery)."
Junior wing Dillon Brooks
On his game-winning shot
"I didn't have the first shot, and then Jordan — being an unselfish player — set a screen; that opened me up and I let it go. … It felt good when it came off, the crowd was going wild before the shot and all my teammates thought it was going in before it did. So it felt good. … I want more moments like that. I want to be put in situations like that for my team."
Freshman guard Payton Pritchard
On his three to make it a one-point game
"I saw (the defender), he backed off and Dillon swung it to me because he didn't have the shot. I wasn't thinking. I just let it go and it went my way."
Notable: Brooks reached 1,198 career points and moved up to 23rd on the UO career list, passing Bob Hamilton (1,183, 1943-46) and Dick Wilkins (1,186, 1944-48). … Boucher, who had missed two games with an ankle injury, entered at the first media timeout of the opening half. … Freshman M.J. Cage, who has yet to play this season and is a candidate to redshirt, was not in uniform and had a walking boot on his left leg. … Former UO athletic director Pat Kilkenny and donor Phil Knight each sat courtside.
Up Next: The Ducks close out the first conference homestand of the year when they host USC in Matthew Knight Arena on Friday (7 p.m., FS1).
