WAIKOLOA, Hawaii – A stellar round from sophomore Aaron Wise highlighted the second day of competition at the Amer Ari Invitational Friday as the Oregon men's golf team sits tied for fourth heading into Saturday's final round.
How It Happened: The Ducks carded a season-low, 9-under 279 Friday to get to 15-under overall and tie themselves in fourth place on the leaderboard for the second-straight day. Arizona State fired a tournament-low 17-under 271 to tie the Ducks after 36 holes. UCLA is the clubhouse leader after a second-round 272 has them at 25-under for the event. USC (-23) and Oregon State (-18) finished Friday at second and third, respectively.
Wise shined Friday, following up a first-round 69 with a 5-under 67 to wrap up the day tied for third at 8-under overall. The sophomore dropped in seven birdies on his way to a new single-round season low. Wise enters Sunday's final round eyeing his second win of the season, and fourth of his collegiate career.
Much like Thursday, senior Zach Foushee showed consistency in posting a 3-under 69 to tie for seventh at 7-under after two rounds. Through 36 holes, the senior has posted eight birdies to only one bogey.
After turning in a 75 on Thursday, Sulman Raza birdied his final hole to notch a subpar second round with a 1-under 71 and move to 2-over for the tournament.
Brandon McIver recovered from a double bogey on his first hole on the par-4 12th with consecutive birdies, but would trade birdies for bogeys the rest of the way to finish at even par for the round and 4-over for the tournament. Freshman Sam Foust, who recorded a 2-under 70 in his first round, couldn't find the same rhythm Friday, and would go on to post a 79.
Individuals: Competing as an individual, Nigel Lett carded a 2-under 70 in his second round to come in at 3-over for the event. Freshman Edwin Yi followed up his first-round 70 with an even-par 72. Yi is tied for 27th heading into the final 18 of the weekend.
