WESTLAKE VILLAGE, Calif. – Led by a strong showing from freshman Edwin Yi, the Oregon men's golf team sits in fourth place after playing 36 holes at the Southwestern Jones Invitational on Monday.
How It Happened: The Ducks fired a 3-over 291 in their first round and a 2-over 290 in their second to finish the first day at the par-72, 6,992-yard North Ranch Country Club Lakes and Oaks courses in fourth overall. USC leads the event at 24-under after a 16-under 272 in Monday's second round. Host Pepperdine is in second at 11-under and San Diego State sits one stroke ahead of the Ducks at 4-over for third.
Edwin Yi turned in an impressive couple of rounds to head into the second and final day of competition in a tie for sixth at 4-under. Yi fired a 1-under 71 for his first 18, before coming back to card a career-low 3-under 69 in his second round. The freshman from Beaumont, Calif., converted three birdies and added an eagle on the par-5 15th on his way to his new collegiate career best.
Zach Foushee finished his first 36 in a tie for 20th at 2-over 146 for the tournament. Foushee turned in a pair of 1-over 73's for his first two rounds. The senior drained a birdie to no bogeys on the front nine of his second round, but ran into trouble on the back nine with a bogey on the par-5 12th and a double bogey on the par-4 14th. Foushee would rebound to drop in a birdie on the 18th to wrap up the round.
After a 2-over 74 in his first round, senior Brandon McIver added a 3-over 75 to wrap up his first day at the event in a tie for 33rd at 5-over.
Sophomore Aaron Wise and junior Sulman Raza are tied for 35th at 6-over after their first two rounds. In his second round, Wise sank an eagle on the par-5 12th, but five bogeys and one double bogey gave the Lake Elsinore, Calif., native a 5-over 77 to follow up his first-round 73.
Competing as an individual, sophomore Andrew Bonner turned in a 6-over 78 in his first round and a 2-over 74 in his second to tie himself for 47th overall after 36 holes.
What It Means: Although USC and Pepperdine separated themselves ahead of the rest of the pack through the first 36 holes of play, Oregon enters Tuesday's final round one stroke back of third place, and eight strokes ahead of fifth-place Fresno State. The Ducks will look to improve on their first two rounds to finish the event strong and gain some momentum heading into their appearance at next week's SH Collegiate Masters in Las Vegas, Nev.
Tuesday's Schedule: Paired with Fresno State and Augusta, the Ducks will tee off at 8:15 a.m. PT for Tuesday's final round.
