Ducks Doomed By Bad Start

STARKVILLE, Miss. – No. 24 Mississippi State scored five runs in the in the first inning and No. 11 Oregon never recovered as the Bulldogs handed the Ducks a 9-3 loss at Dudy Noble Field on Saturday.
How it happened: After giving up two hits and striking out two batters in the first inning, Oregon starter Matt Krook (0-1) lost command and couldn't find the strike zone. He walked three straight to allow two runs to score, then hit a batter before walking another batter to give MSU (11-3-1) a 4-0 lead one time through the lineup. George Horton pulled Krook after he fell behind leadoff hitter Jacob Robson, but reliever Isaiah Carranza finished walking Robson making it 5-0. Krook was charged with all five runs on just two hits with five walks in 0.2 innings pitched.
Susnara move to clean up is positive: Oregon (8-4) shook up the lineup for the first time this season with mixed results. One move that worked was moving sophomore Tim Susnara to the cleanup spot from the six hole. The Ducks' normal catcher, who started at first today, responded going 2-for-4 with an walk and a run scored. Susnara is batting a team-best .316 through 12 games.
Too many Ks: A day after striking out 12 times, Oregon hitters fanned 15 times on Saturday to run the total to 27 Ks in two games. Mississippi State starter Austin Sexton (2-1) finished with 12 strikeouts in six innings and struck out every Duck starter at least once.
Karraker makes return: One piece of good news in the loss was the return of Jack Karraker to the mound. The Ducks' senior right-hander made his first appearance since leaving a game at California on March 15, 2015 with an injury. Karraker pitched the eighth inning and retired three of the four batters he faced.
On deck: The Ducks and Bulldogs wrap up the series on Sunday at 8:30 a.m. (PT). David Peterson (2-0, 0.45) will take the mound for the Ducks.
