Ducks Blanked As Utes Take Series
03/20/16 | Baseball
EUGENE, Ore. – Utah starter Josh Lapiana threw a complete game shutout as the Utes knocked off Oregon, 2-0, to win the three-game series on Sunday at PK Park.
How It Happened: Utah (6-12, 2-1 Pac-12) took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Kody Davis reached with a leadoff walk and came around to score on a base hit by Dallas Carroll. UO starter David Peterson (2-2) shut out the Utes over the next five innings, but the Ducks were unable to give the left-hander any run support and the Utes took a 1-0 lead through seven.
Utah extended its lead to 2-0 in the seventh against the Oregon bullpen, getting runners on the corners before a balk was called on Brac Warren to bring in a run. Stephen Nogosek entered the game with two on and two out and escaped the jam, and went on to finish the game for the Ducks with 2.1 scoreless innings. Nogosek has not allowed a run in 12.1 innings pitched this season.
Oregon (9-7, 1-2 Pac-12) couldn't get anything going offensively against Lapiana (1-3) after setting a season-high with 14 hits on Saturday. Lapiana held the Ducks to three hits and issued just one walk over the nine-inning effort. The Ducks threatened in the ninth, getting the first two men on base, but Lapiana retired the next three Ducks in order to secure the win and the series.
Peterson Takes Tough Loss: Coming off a loss at Mississippi State, Peterson rebounded nicely to throw six innings of one-run ball against the Utes. He allowed just four hits and struck out six batters. Peterson was limited to six innings because of his pitch count, which was inflated by three walks, two hit batsmen and some lengthy Utah at-bats. Peterson allowed the leadoff man to reach base in four of his six innings, but was able to work around those thanks to timely pitching and a pair of Oregon double plays.
Notable: With a walk in the first inning, Austin Grebeck has now reached base in all 16 games this year and his last 29 games dating back to last season. His eight game hitting streak was snapped with an 0-for-3 day at the plate … Nick Catalano made his first start of the season, playing left field and batting second.
On Deck: The Ducks will head north to face Seattle in a midweek game at 5 p.m. on Tuesday before taking on Pac-12 rival Washington for a three-game weekend set at Husky Ballpark from Thursday to Saturday.
