EUGENE – The Oregon men's tennis team picked up its eighth-straight victory with a 6-1 win over Minnesota at the Student Tennis Center on Friday.
How It Happened: The Ducks (12-1) came out strong in doubles, quickly picking up wins on courts two and three to clinch the doubles point.
Cormac Clissold and Thomas Laurent earned the first win of the night with a 6-1 win over Josip Krstanovic and Justyn Levin on No. 3 to win their sixth straight. Daan Maasland and Simon Stevens moved to 11-2 as a tandem in dual action with a 6-1 triumph on No. 2 to clinch the point.
The Ducks stormed into singles, rapidly locking up their 12th win of the season with three straight-set victories. Stevens struck first in singles play, dropping Krstanovic, 6-1, 6-3, on No. 3 to push his win streak to six. No. 71 Maasland added to the Oregon advantage with a 6-2, 6-3 win in the top singles spot.
It was Clissold that clinched the match for the Ducks. After taking the first set handily, 6-1, over Minnesota's Felix Corwin, Clissold was pushed to a tiebreaker to decide the second set. Corwin hung tough the first few points, but Clissold ultimately took the tiebreaker, 7-3, to take the set and the match.
The Gophers got on the board when Minnesota's Marino Alpeza defeated Ethan Young-Smith in a 6-3, 6-4 match on No. 6.
Oregon dealt two final blows to the Gophers with wins from Jayson Amos and Thomas Laurent. Amos picked up a 6-3, 6-4 win over Justyn Levin on No. 4 before Laurent finished off Ruben Weber, 7-6(2), 6-2, on the second court.
Quotable – Head Coach Nils Schyllander: “We knew (Minnesota was) good. We knew their doubles was really good, and I am so proud of the way we came out in doubles. That's the best doubles we've played all year. That was the best doubles from top to bottom (this season). It was rock solid.”
“It's a process. We've still got to keep getting better going into Pac-12 season. It's just, day by day, getting better. If we show up to work Monday through Thursday, good things are going to happen.”
Up Next: The Ducks will return to the Student Tennis Center on Saturday, March 12 to host Fresno State at 11 a.m.
