EUGENE, Ore. — Oregon ended a four-game losing streak and evened the score with Oregon State in nonconference play this season, beating the Beavers 7-6 before 1,838 at PK Park on Wednesday.
How It Happened: Stinging from a midweek loss to OSU and then a sweep at UCLA last week, the Ducks (18-16) cured their ills right off the bat Wednesday. After two shutout innings from spot starter Cole Stringer (1-0), the Ducks spotted the UO pitching staff seven runs in the bottom of the second.
Steven Packard led off the second with a double, and a hit batter and a walk loaded the bases. Daniel Patzlaff and Tim Susnara moved everybody up 90 feet each with RBI singles, and Travis Moniot reached on an error to make it 3-0. Austin Grebeck walked to drive in a fourth run, Jake Bennett drove in two more with a double to right-center and Nick Catalano capped the outburst with a run-scoring single.
The Beavers rallied for three in the fourth and two in the fifth to get within 7-5. In the ninth, UO closer Stephen Nogosek surrendered a one-out walk followed by a single, with a run coming around on an outfield error. With the winning run at third base, Nogosek coaxed an infield pop out and then ended the game with a strikeout for his 10th save.
Notable: Stringer threw his fourth and fifth scoreless innings against Oregon State this season, after three the previous week. ... Grebeck threw out a runner at third base from center field in the fifth inning, his eighth career outfield assists to tie Aaron Jones for the UO record. ... Matt Eureste made just his second start of the season at third base. ... Junior pitcher Connor Zwetsch made his collegiate debut with a scoreless third inning of work (Zwetsch did make an appearance in Oregon's game against Portland in Hillsboro on April 13 but that game was suspended after eight innings and stats won't be official until the game is completed on May 17).
Up Next: The Ducks return to conference play when they open a three-game series with Washington State in PK Park on Friday at 6 p.m.
