Spring Game to celebrate 100th anniversary of UO's first Rose Bowl team with throwback uniforms

EUGENE, Ore. — The 100th anniversary of Oregon's first Rose Bowl team will be celebrated when the UO football team takes the field Saturday for its annual spring game.
The two teams that will match up in Autzen Stadium and on Pac-12 Networks at 11 a.m. — “Webfoots” and “Mighty Oregon” — will wear true throwbacks, to the 1916 season that ended with the Ducks beating Penn in the Rose Bowl, 14-0. Until 1925, the football team wore blue, yellow and white, which will be reflected in the uniforms worn Saturday. Those original school colors were derived from the state flag.
The idea for 100th anniversary throwbacks began with current UO players. Webfoots will wear blue jerseys, Mighty Oregon will be in white and quarterbacks and other protected players will be in yellow. Both teams will wear gold pants and gold helmets.
The 1916 Oregon football season was a breakthrough year, in the Willamette Valley and beyond. The Ducks were dominant, going 7-0-1 and outscoring their opponents 244-14 under Hall of Fame coach Huge Bezdek, who had recently begun to employ the forward pass.
The Rose Bowl win over Penn on Jan. 1, 1917, resonated across the country, as a West Coast team established equal footing with traditional East Coast powers. Oregon's first all-American, Shy Huntington, led the Rose Bowl win by passing for one touchdown and running for the other, and intercepting three passes. The 1916 team also featured Hall of Fame halfback and tackle J.W. Beckett.
The 1916 season is also memorable as the year “The Mighty Oregon March” first echoed throughout campus. Now known simply as “Mighty Oregon,” the school fight song will be reflected on Saturday's uniforms in the form of script on the sleeves.
