Hawkins Ties Shutout Record in Win

EUGENE, Ore. - Cheridan Hawkins picked up her 1,000th career strikeout and tied the program's career record with her 31st shutout in a 2-0 win over No. 17 Arizona on Friday night at Jane Sanders Stadium.
The Ducks (36-6, 14-2 Pac-12) backed Hawkins' one-hit shutout with a run off an error in the third and a solo blast from Sammie Puentes in the fifth.
HOW IT HAPPENED: Hawkins allowed a walk in the first and a double in the second but the standout lefty retired the next 17 straight batters and finished with eight strikeouts.
Offensively, the Ducks didn't get much going against Arizona pitcher Danielle O'Toole. O'Toole went six innings with three strikeouts with two runs allowed on two walks and four hits.
Sammie Puentes, who entered the game as a pinch runner and remained in centerfield, was the only Duck with a hard hit ball all night. The junior smashed her first homer of the year high into the bleachers in center in the fifth inning to put the Ducks up, 2-0.
Oregon's first run of the game came on a throwing error on the Arizona catcher as the Ducks stole second and the runner at third, Lauren Lindvall, scored.
All four of Oregon's hits came from the bottom of the order as the Ducks' 1-6 hitters combined to go 0-for-16.
HEAD COACH MIKE WHITE: On Cheridan Hawkins' performance - "I thought Cheridan was in command of her pitches. You could tell her poise and her presence was back out there. She wasn't worried about 'what-ifs,' she was just attacking batters and her ball was moving. She had good velocity and a good changeup. I thought that was one of the best games she's thrown all year."
CHERIDAN HAWKINS: On reaching 1,000 career strikeouts - "Sheer joy. Sheer happiness. Being here and achieving something like that is amazing. I mean, with our crowd, I literally had tears in my eyes. You know that they're so happy for you and that makes you so happy. It was a really, really good feeling and I was glad I could share it with my team."
SHUTOUT RECORD: Hawkin's 31st shutout moved her into a tie for the UO lead with Katie Wiese, who had 31 shutouts in just two seasons with the Ducks (1989-90).
1,000 STRIKEOUT: Hawkins entered the game with 997 strikeouts and reached 1,000 with a changeup looking on a full cout against Arizona's Katiyana Mauga to start the fourth inning. The senior, who already broke the Ducks' career strikeout record earlier this season, is the 10th Pac-12 pitcher to reach 1,000 career strikeouts since 2006, joining the likes of California's Jolene Henderson (2013) and Washington's Danielle Lawrie (2009), who was the announcer for the Pac-12 Networks. She is the first to do it since ASU's Dallas Escobedo reached 1,000 career strikeouts in 2014.
WINS RECORD UP NEXT: Hawkins' shutout win over the Wildcats was the 99th victory of her career. She is just one off the UO record of 100 set by Jessica Moore (2010-13).
UP NEXT: Oregon will look to clinch a sixth-straight series win over Arizona on Saturday in a Pac-12 Networks televised game at 5 PM.
