Santoso Aces No. 10, Salko And Scavo Lead Ducks At 2-Over
LUBBOCK, Texas – Opening its fall schedule at the Red Raider Invitational, the Oregon women's golf team sits in third place at 15-over after playing 36 holes on Monday at The Rawls Course.
How It Happened: After a 12-over first round, the Ducks regrouped over the second 18 holes to move up two spots on the leaderboard. The Ducks' 3-over second round was tied for the best in the field with New Mexico State, who leads the event at 9-over going into Tuesday's final round. Host Texas Tech is 12-over in second place playing on its home course.
Senior Cathleen Santoso provided the highlight of the day with an ace on the par-3 10th, followed by a birdie on 11. The Sydney, Australia native finished the second round 2-over with the eagle and two birdies, carding a 5-over 149 over the first 36 holes of her final season as a Duck, good for a tie for 14th in the field.
While Santoso provided the fireworks with the ace, the most productive performances of the day came from sophomores Petra Salko and Kathleen Scavo, who each finished the day 2-over to sit in a tie for seventh going into the final round, five strokes behind Texas Tech's Lauren Mason who leads at 3-under.
Scavo was the Ducks' most consistent performer throughout the day, shooting a 1-over 73 in the opening round, including a pair of birdies on the back nine. She followed that up with another 73 in the second round, picking up birdies on 10 and 18. Scavo had back-to-back bogeys just once all day, and only six total over the 36 holes.
Salko overcame a 4-over first round, hurt by a triple-bogey on the par-5 18th, with a tremendous 2-under second round. The second round started with a bang, as Salko eagled No. 2, her first hole, to get the round off on the right foot. Salko put up a double bogey on No. 4, but shot 2-under from there on out to fly 18 spots up the leaderboard from the first round.
Freshman Amy Matsuoka was impressive in her first collegiate event, as the Newport Beach, Calif. native shot a 4-over 76 in the first round with a pair of birdies. Matsuoka came out strong in the second round with three birdies, including going 2-under over the last four holes, to fire a 2-over 74 and finish the day tied for 17th at 6-over.
Fellow freshman Brooke Hamilton had an up-and-down day in her first event, playing No. 1 after winning the Ducks' qualifier earlier in the week, shooting an 81 in a first round that included a double and triple bogey. The native of Aukland, New Zealand regrouped in the second round, firing a 3-over 76 with birdies on 17 and 18 to carry some momentum into the final round.
Quotes:
Head Coach Ria Scott
On the first day…
"The conditions today were so different than anything we play on the west coast; constant wind, firm and at 3,200 feet. I was proud of how our players embraced the challenge and learned more about the course throughout the day. This is exactly why we have to come here to Lubbock, to expose them to conditions and a course style they wouldn't get at home."
Amy Matsuoka, Freshman
On her first collegiate event...
"It was a great experience because I got to play golf in a team atmosphere," Matsuoka said. "Everyone was really supportive of each other."
Cathleen Santoso, Senior
On her ace on No. 10…
"It happened at a great time in my round and provided a good rhythm to my closing nine," Santoso said about the ace. "I was having a good laugh with the coaches while waiting on the tee, so I knew I was relaxed and was confident with the club in my hand. Five seconds later I saw my ball disappear, it was surreal."
Kathleen Scavo, Sophomore
On the day…
"Today was a good day for the Ducks. We fought through the windy conditions, and I think we have great momentum going into the final day tomorrow. I'm proud of my team and the direction we're heading."
Up Next: The Ducks will look to make up ground on New Mexico State and Texas Tech in Tuesday's final round of the Red Raider Invitational. The round is set to go off at 6:30 a.m. PT.
