PORTLAND, Ore. – Norman Xiong turned in another stellar performance, shooting a 3-under par 68 in round two of the Nike Collegiate Invitational at Pumpkin Ridge Golf Club Monday. Xiong is 9-under par for the tournament and two shots behind 36-hole leader Brandon Wu of Stanford.
Oregon is 7-over par as a team for the week after shooting a 3-over par 287 and in a tie for 12th place heading into Tuesday's final round.
How it Happened: Beginning his day on the back nine, Xiong picked up where he left off in round one, making birdie on the 11th hole and moving to 7-under for the week. After bogeying the 14th hole, he made three birdies in a four-hole stretch as he made the turn to reach 9-under for the tournament. Xiong made birdie on the fourth hole before giving a shot back with a bogey on hole five to finish with a 68.
Ryan Gronlund carded a steady 1-under par round of 70 to get to 1-under for the tournament and into a tie for 24th. Edwin Yi shot a 2-over par 73 after an uneven day in which he recorded five birdies but made five bogeys and one double bogey.
Kevin Geniza turned in a second round of 5-over par 76 and Donald Kay shot a 7-over par 78 to round out the scoring for the Ducks. Geniza got off to a solid start, shooting a 1-under par 34 on his first nine but couldn't keep the momentum going, finishing with a second nine of 6-over par 42.
What it Means: Xiong will look for his third career individual victory and second of the season after he claimed medalist honors at the Rod Myers Invitational to open the season. He matched his low 36-hole score this season, having also shot 133 through two rounds at the Rod Myers Invitational. Gronlund has now shot even par or better in six of his eight rounds this season and has a scoring average of 71.
