Norman Xiong erased a two-shot deficit coming into the final round of the Nike Collegiate Invitational to win his second tournament of the season.
PORTLAND, Ore. – Oregon sophomore Norman Xiong won his second tournament of the young season, finishing 13-under par in the Nike Collegiate Invitational at Pumpkin Ridge Golf Club Tuesday. Xiong shot a final round 4-under par 67 to top USC's Justin Suh and Stanford's Brandon Wu by one shot.
Oregon finished the tournament strong as a team, shooting 6-under par in the final round to close the week at 1-over par and in 10th place.
How it Happened: Xiong came into the day two shots off the lead at 9-under par, but birdied three of his first four holes to quickly gain the lead. After giving a shot back with a bogey on the 14th hole, he responded with birdies on 16 and 18 to reach 13-under for the tournament at the turn.
Xiong bogeyed the fifth hole but bounced back immediately with a birdie on hole six to get back to 13-under. He sank a long par putt on the ninth hole, his final hole of the day, for what turned out to be the tournament-winning putt.
Ryan Gronlund had the low round of the day for the Ducks, shooting a bogey-free 5-under par round of 66 to finish 6-under for the week and tied for 10th. He shot a 4-under par 32 on the front nine after starting the day on the back nine with a 1-under par 34.
Edwin Yi rounded out the trio of Ducks with under par rounds, shooting a 1-under par 70 to close the tournament 2-over par and in a tie for 38th.
Donald Kay shot a 4-over par 75 and Kevin Geniza turned in a final round 7-over par 78 to round out the Oregon lineup.
Notable: Xiong earned his third career individual win, tying him for third most in program history with Wyndham Clark (2016-17), Ted Snavely (1994-95) and Eugene Wong (2009-12) … It was the first outright win for Xiong after he shared medalist honors in his previous two victories … Xiong set a career-low for total strokes in a three-round tournament … Gronlund shot a new career-low round with his 5-under par 66 … He recorded his fifth career top-10 finish and second in a row … Gronlund has shot even-par or better in five consecutive rounds, tying a career-long streak.
