The second set had a similar start with Bushamuka jumping out to a 3-0 lead, but Laurent managed to find his groove sending the match into a third set winning 12 of the final 13 games to defeat Bushamuka 5-7, 6-4, 6-0.
In doubles play, Laurent and senior Cormac Clissold drew the second-seeded duo of Will Little and Johannes Schretter of Baylor in the first round.
After falling behind early, Laurent and Clissold pulled to within one game 5-4, but could not complete the comeback dropping the opening set 6-4. The 19th-ranked Baylor pair went on to win the match 6-4, 6-2.
Up Next: Laurent will face another challenge in the second round of singles play Thursday taking on No. 22 Harrison Scott of Texas at 11:15 a.m. PT.
