Physical Battle Yields First UO Loss
11/23/17 | Men's Basketball
Neither Oregon nor Connecticut shot as well as 40 percent and they combined for 53 fouls in the Huskies' 71-63 win Thursday in the PK80 Invitational.
PORTLAND — The Oregon men's basketball team suffered its first defeat of the 2017-18 campaign Thursday, losing 71-63 to Connecticut in the first round of the PK80 Invitational at the Moda Center.
In a game that lacked flow due to 53 combined fouls — 30 by Oregon — and compounded by the Ducks' 17 turnovers, Oregon dropped into the consolation bracket of the tournament. The Ducks will play the loser of Thursday's late game between Michigan State and DePaul on Friday night in Veterans Memorial Coliseum.
How It Happened: The Ducks (4-1) found foul trouble right off the bat, with freshman Troy Brown Jr. picking up three by halftime. Connecticut (4-0) scored on three straight possessions midway through the first half to lead 24-18, when Oregon mounted its only sustained run of the half. The Ducks scored seven in a row, taking the lead on an Elijah Brown three-pointer and going up 27-24 on a jump shot by MiKyle McIntosh. But Oregon missed its next eight field-goal attempts, and UConn powered into a 38-29 lead before Paul White scored just before halftime to make it 38-31.
The Ducks trailed 42-33 early in the second half when they scored 10 straight, sparked by a Payton Pritchard layin, and capped by a spinning drive to the hoop by Pritchard for a 43-42 lead. Oregon trailed 48-47 when the Ducks put together their last solid surge, a 6-0 run capped by two free throws from White. It remained a one-possession game for the next few minutes, with UConn making two free throws to tie it, 62-62, with 3:10 left. Oregon's subsequent possessions were a traveling call on Troy Brown, a missed layin by McIntosh, a missed three-pointer by Pritchard and an offensive foul on Pritchard, allowing UConn to finish the game on an 11-1 run.
Who Stood Out: Pritchard opened the game with a steal and a three-pointer, and led the Ducks with 14 points in his homecoming. White added 12 and McIntosh had his first double-double with the Ducks, 10 points and 11 rebounds. Roman Sorkin made both of his first-half three-point attempts for six points, but the rest of the team went 3-of-22 from three-point range — including 0-of-10 in the second half.
What It Means: The Ducks knew they'd be tested by the stacked PK80 Invitational field, and Connecticut provided it right off the bat. Now they'll need to bounce back quickly from adversity, just 24 hours after their first loss.
Quotable:
Head coach Dana Altman
"To a man, I'm not sure anybody felt like they played well. Our ball movement on the offensive end was awful; way too much dribbling. … Everybody's disappointed. Our first time under the lights, and with a little pressure, and we sure didn't handle it very well."
"That's a poorly coached team. I wish I could say something else, but we were a poorly coached team. Our ball movement; our defensive intensity; seven assists with 17 turnovers; there's no way I can say we played a good game with those kinds of numbers."
Senior forward MiKyle McIntosh
"The fouls, they come in basketball. There was just some execution we have to work on, some things we have to listen to coach about — getting into plays faster, doing certain things. It wasn't about the fouls."
"I think that with the guys we have, we're all competitors. We're going to come back out with a better effort, especially after coach just talked to us about that. Better effort, better intensity, from the bench all the way to the starters. I think our team will respond the right way."
Notable: McIntosh posted his third career double-double, and finished one off his career high of 12 rebounds. … Sorkin returned from a two-game absence from a foot injury. … The Ducks had at least three scorers in double figures for the fifth time in five games this season. … The Ducks were outrebounded for the first time this season, 39-36.
Up Next: The Ducks move over to Veterans Memorial Coliseum to play their second-round game Friday night, against either Michigan State or DePaul.
