EUGENE, Ore. -- Oregon sophomore quarterback Justin Herbert was named a first-team CoSIDA Academic All-American on Thursday.
"It's really special," Herbert said. "I really focus on trying my best in school. Fortunately I have been able to manage both football and academics."
Herbert, who has a 4.08 grade-point average in biology, is the Ducks' first player to earn first-team honors since defensive lineman Nick Reed won his second consecutive award in 2008. Herbert, a Eugene native, is also just the third Oregon quarterback to win the award joining Joey Harrington (2001) and Bill Musgrave (1990).
"Justin epitomizes what it means to be a student-athlete," Oregon head coach Mario Cristobal said. "Through hard work he has successfully handled the demands of being both a top-notch athlete and a great student. What is even more impressive is Justin has achieved a 4.08 GPA in biology, an extremely challenging field of study."
A seven-game starter as a true freshman last season, Herbert got the Ducks off to a 4-1 start this fall before being sidelined by a collar bone injury. He returned for the Arizona game and led the Ducks to wins in their final two games. Herbert finished the regular season completing 113-of-170 passes (66.5 percent) for 1,750 yards, with 13 touchdowns and three interceptions.
Herbert is joined on the team by his brother, Mitch, who is a second-team selection and a senior wide receiver at Montana State.
Oregon has had nine players named first-team academic All-American dating back to 1962. In addition to Herbert, Reed, Harrington and Musgrave, offensive lineman Ryan Schmid (2000, 2001), punter Mike Preacher (1986), linebacker Tim Casey (1965), offensive guard Ed Thomas (1962) and offensive tackle Steve Barnett (1962) have claimed first-team academic accolades. UO has also had five players named second or third-team All-America with the last being Carson York (2011).
To be eligible for selection to the academic All-America team, a student-athlete must have a minimum 3.0 grade-point average, appear in at least 50 percent of their team's games and be named to a CoSIDA All-District Team.
