Xiong, Clark Co-Champions, Ducks Team Champions at Wyoming Intercollegiate
02/19/17 | Men's Golf
PALM DESERT, Calif. – The No. 10 University of Oregon men's golf team clinched the team championship title at the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate along with freshman Norman Xiong and redshirt senior Wyndham Clark being named co-champions overall. Sophomore Edwin Yi also finished atop the leaderboard for the Ducks, tying for fifth.
In total, the Ducks tallied a 26-under 838 (282-271-285) at the par-72, 7,322 yard course at the Classic Club, besting the field of 22. Oregon's 838 ties for the best total of the year alongside the third place finish at the Ameri Ari Invitational.
Pac-12 foe No. 24 Colorado (291-266-290—847, -17) finished second, nine strokes behind the Ducks. No. 5 Texas Tech (292-278-280—850, -14) took home third, while No. 34 Kansas (293-276-293—862, -2), and TCU (289-288-285—862, -2) tied for fourth.
Jeremy Paul of Colorado finished three strokes behind Xiong and Clark for third overall. Daniel Hudson (Kansas), Hurly Long (Texas Tech) and Federico Zucchetti (Texas Tech) tied with Yi with 4-under 212s.
How it Happened: Paced with an unwavering first place spot from the first and second rounds, the Ducks were 28-under through the first five holes of the third round. Xiong held onto his No. 1 spot, also never faltering from the very beginning of the tournament, followed by Yi who jumped to second. Clark, who ended the first day of the tournament tied for 11th, was 8-under and in third place overall.
Through the front nine, the Ducks added five strokes to their total as Yi shot a double bogey on hole six and a triple bogey was taken into account by Raza. Those scores didn't make a vast difference in the team standings however, as the Colorado Buffaloes (-14) were nine strokes behind the Ducks (-23).
With finishing holes to go, the Ducks were at even par on the day. Clark (-9) was a stroke behind Xiong (-10), as a bit of good luck would work in his favor on the 18th hole. With an impressive Eagle, the Denver, Colo., native officially met-up with his teammate to clinch his second individual championship as a Duck.
Xiong finished the tournament with scores of 67-65-73—205 (-11), while Clark tallied 72-65-68—205 (-11). In his first three collegiate golf tournaments, Xiong has shot a 212, 206 and 205. Clark's 205 is just one stroke ahead of his best of the year thus far, a 204, which he earned at the Nike Golf Collegiate - his very first tournament as an Oregon Duck. Yi, with his best finish of both fall and spring combined, added marks of 70-67-75—212 (-4).
Freshman Kevin Geniza fired his best round of the tournament today with a 69, and finished tied for 31 (76-74—219, +3). Redshirt senior Sulman Raza rounded out the Oregon lineup tied for 84th (73-74-82—229, +13).
Golfing as an individual, redshirt sophomore Ryan Gronlund had his third best finish of the year, tying for 27th (76-72-70—218, +2).
Altogether, the Ducks carded 61 birdies, met par 162 times, and had two Eagles – both contributed by Clark. Xiong led the team with 18 birdies.
What it Means: The win is the second team victory for Oregon this spring. Oregon finished first at the Arizona Intercollegiate in Tucson, Ariz., a month ago. The first-place finish is Clark's second as a Duck. He also took home the individual title in Tucson.
The Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate is only Xiong's third collegiate tournament. With headlines focusing on the mastery that transfer Clark brought to 2016 NCAA champions, head coach Casey Martin can feel confident knowing the pure depth of his lineup. The Ducks are making their presence known early in the 2017 season, hinting at what could be another trip to the championship if they can sustain it.
Entering this tournament, Clark has a No. 4 ranking overall by Golfstat with an average of 69.31. Xiong is tied for 8th with an average of 69.67. With both of their dominance this tournament, they both should see jumps in the rankings. With a team ranking of 10, the Ducks should also see some moves in the overall rankings.

Quotes: Head coach Casey Martin -
"It was an incredible finish to a great event. To have my top two players battle it out to a co-championship feels really special. Wyndham's Eagle on 18 was incredible, and testifies to the kind of player he is. For Norman, who early enrolled and should be in high school currently – for him to win his third ever collegiate event leaves me speechless. Edwin also finished within the top five and Kevin came up huge today too. Overall, just great wins. We're coming home happy."
Looking Ahead: The Ducks will return to the Oregon rain for the Gonzaga-hosted Bandon Dunes Championship at the Old Macdonald golf course in Bandon, Ore. The three-day tournament will begin Sunday, March 12 and conclude Tuesday, March 14.
