Brooks’ Three Caps Courageous Comeback at Cal
02/22/17 | Men's Basketball
BERKELEY, Calif. —Dillon Brooks hit a three-pointer from the top of the key with two-tenths of a second remaining to lead No. 6 Oregon to a 68-65 come-from-behind win against California Wednesday night at Hass Pavilion.
It was part of his team-high 22 points as the Ducks improved to 25-4 for the first time in program history. At 14-2 in Pac-12 play, Oregon moved to within half a game of first-place Arizona.
How It Happened: Early on, the Ducks' run of heartbreak in Berkeley looked to continue following a 16-point first half. Oregon connected on just seven-of-24 field goals in its lowest-scoring first half of the season.
Cal (18-9, 9-6) pushed its lead to 16 points, 32-16, :35 into the second half before the Ducks began to claw their way back into it with defense and timely three-pointers.
The Bears still led 49-34 with 9:50 to play when Chris Boucher hit a pair of three-pointers in a 10-3 run that cut Cal's lead to eight, 52-44.
Then with Cal ahead 59-49 with 4:15 to play, Oregon connected on three straight three-pointers – one each by Boucher, Dylan Ennis and Payton Pritchard – to pull within one at 59-58 at the 2:58 mark and set up one of the more memorable finishes in nation this season.
A pair of Charlie Moore free throws gave Cal a three point edge, before a Brooks' jumper and a Boucher layup gave Oregon its first lead of the game, 62-61, with 1:48 to play. Grant Mullins put Cal back in front with a circus shot in the lane, 63-62, with 1:21 to play.
Brooks then gave Oregon the lead with a jumper that just barely crept over the front rim, 64-63 with :58 to go, and after a Duck defensive stop, Cal fouled Tyler Dorsey with :22 left. Dorsey hit one-of-two free throws for a 65-63 Oregon lead, before Cal went down low to Ivan Rabb, who put back his own miss to tie the game at 65-65 with :09 to go.
Ennis brought the ball to front court and dropped it off to Brooks, who worked the right side and found room behind the arc, where he hit a dramatic game-winner for the second time this season. Brooks gave Oregon an 89-87 win over UCLA on Dec. 28 by hitting a three-pointer with less than a second to play.
Who Stood Out: Boucher scored all 18 of his points in the second half, hitting three-of-five threes. Brooks scored eight of his 22 points after picking up his fourth foul with 10:06 left in the game. Ennis was the other Duck in double figures with 13 points.
What It Means: The only other Duck team to reach 14-2 in conference play was the 1939 NCAA Champion Tall Firs, who won the Pacific Coast Conference play at 14-2.
