Ducks Fall Short in Top-10 Battle at Pauley
02/09/17 | Men's Basketball
LOS ANGELES — No. 10 UCLA outmuscled No. 5 Oregon on the boards and in the paint in the second half and then held on late for an 82-79 win Thursday night at Pauley Pavilion.
The Ducks (21-4, 10-2) led for more than 35 minutes in the game, but the Bruins (22-3, 9-4) eventually wore Oregon down late in the second half, outscoring the Ducks 43-31 in the second frame.
How It Happened: The Bruins beat Oregon 34-26 in the paint, including a 20-6 edge in the second half. UCLA also outrebounded the Ducks 43-35 for the game, including 25-17 in the second half.
Oregon led by as many as 19 points in the first half, 37-19, before UCLA went on a 14-0 run to close to 37-32 with 3:38 to play. Tyler Dorsey put an end to the run with a traditional three-point play as the Ducks rebounded for a 48-39 halftime lead.
Dorsey scored 12 points in the first half, with Dillon Brooks and Dylan Ennis each adding eight.
Who Stood Out: Brooks and Dorsey each scored 19 points for the Ducks, while Payton Pritchard added 13. Jordan Bell contributed a career-high 15 rebounds.
What It Means: The Ducks fall a game back of Arizona (11-1) in the Pac-12 race. Despite the loss, Oregon is still having an historic season. Oregon's 21-4 record is the program's best since going 24-1 90 years ago in 1926-27. The Ducks' 10-2 conference mark is the program's best since the 1939 NCAA Champion Tall Firs, which opened Pacific Coast Conference play at 11-1.
Quotable: Head coach Dana Altman -
"I think rebounding was really the telling stat."
"We just got stuck in the mud the last 10 minutes and they played better than us down the stretch."
Awards Watch: A day after he was named to the Wooden Award "Late Season Top 20," Brooks was selected for the Naismith Top 30 List on Thursday. It was just the latest in a recent string of honors for Brooks, who was also named one of 10 finalists for the Julius Erving Small Forward of the Year award, and garnered Pac-12 player of the week laurels for the second time this season.
Notable: This was the third all-time top-10 matchup between Oregon and UCLA. The Bruins have won all three.
Up Next: The Ducks face their third consecutive 20-win opponent in USC on Saturday at the Galen Center (7:30 p.m., Pac-12 Networks).
