Peterson Turns in Another Dominant Performance
03/10/17 | Baseball
EUGENE, Ore. – David Peterson dominated for the second straight start to lead Oregon to a 2-1 non-conference win over Santa Clara on Friday night at PK Park.
How it Happened: Peterson (3-1) struck out 14 batters while walking just one and scattering three hits over 7.1 innings. Peterson retired 11 of the first 12 batters he faced and struck out the side in two innings. Kenyon Yovan pitched 1.2 innings in relief, striking out four and giving up one unearned run to earn his fourth save.
Jake Bennett drove in both of Oregon's runs with a third inning RBI groundout and a sacrifice fly in the seventh inning.
Santa Clara (3-10) made things interesting in the ninth inning scoring on a passed ball to make it a one-run game with the tying run at third base, but Yovan ended the threat with a strikeout.
Box Score Notes: Matthew Dyer finished the night 2-for-4 with a double … Kyle Kasser went 1-for-3 with a double and a run scored … Morgan McCullough turned in a 1-for-2 night with a pair of walks … Gabe Matthews reached in three of his four plate appearances, going 1-for-3 with a walk.
Notable: Peterson's 31 strikeouts are the most in back-to-back outings since the program returned in 2009 … Tyler Anderson, who struck out 26 batters in a two-game stretch in 2011 had the previous high … Peterson's eighth inning base-on-balls ended his streak of 81 consecutive batters faced without a walk … Peterson has gone 16.1 consecutive innings without allowing a run dating back to the fifth inning against UC Irvine (Feb. 24) … Kasser is 13-for-25 over the last six games and has reached base in all 13 games this season … Oregon pitchers have now struck out 100 batters while walking just nine in the nine wins this season.
On Deck: Oregon (9-4) and Santa Clara will play game three of the series tomorrow afternoon at 2 p.m. at PK Park with Matt Mercer getting the ball for the Ducks and Grant Nechak scheduled to start for the Broncos.
