LOS ANGELES – The Oregon women's golf team closed out the Gifford Great 8 Collegiate Match Play on Tuesday with a tough loss to Oregon State at Brentwood Country Club.
The Ducks and the Beavers finished the match tied, 2.5-2.5, but OSU was awarded the win based on the first tiebreaker of most holes won (6-5).
How it Happened: Playing in the final match of the tournament, the Ducks and Beavers squared off for seventh place in the Gifford Great 8 hosted by UCLA. Sophomore Petra Salko earned her second win of the tournament to put a point on the board for Oregon, taking down OSU's Hannah Swanson, 4&3. Salko took a one-hole lead on her second hole of the day and was 4-up through her first nine to take control. Cathleen Santoso also scored for Oregon with a 2-up victory over Susie Cavanagh in 18 holes.
The half point came from freshman Amy Matsuoka, who was all square with the Beavers' Elyse Smidinger after 18 holes.
The Beavers picked up two points with wins by Olivia Benzin over junior Kelsey Ulep (3&2) and Nicole Schroeder over sophomore Kathleen Scavo (3&2).
What it Means: Oregon finished the Gifford Great 8 Match Play 0-3, but gained important match play experience that could prove valuable for the Ducks come postseason play.
Results: Oregon State 2.5, Oregon 2.5 (OSU wins tiebreaker on holes won, 6-5)
