Ducks Take Winning Streak To Arizona

Oregon beat Portland on Tuesday, 6-1, and takes a five-game win streak into the resumption of Pac-12 play Thursday at Arizona.
EUGENE, Ore. — The Oregon baseball team made it five straight Tuesday, beating Portland 6-1 at PK Park to complete an undefeated homestand. The Ducks (22-8) now head out on the road and resume Pac-12 play at Arizona, a three-game series beginning Thursday at 7 p.m.
How It Happened: The Ducks jumped on the Pilots early and often. After Portland scored during a rainy top of the first, Oregon took the lead for good in the bottom of the inning on a two-run double by Matthew Dyer.
The Ducks tacked on two more in the third when Kyle Kasser scored on a sacrifice fly and Jake Bennett came home on a wild pitch. The lead reached 6-1 in the fourth when Morgan McCullough singled in Taylor Travess, and later scored from third when Kasser got caught in a rundown between first and second.
The RBI double off Cole Stringer in the first ended up being the only hit off the UO left-hander (3-1), who went four innings to earn the win.
"The heaviest rain was when he was out there, and he made it look like it was a 70-degree day," UO coach George Horton said. "We never take that for granted, and he set the tone."
Stringer struck out five while walking one, and was backed up by scoreless relief pitching from James Acuna, Zack Noll, Cooper Stiles, Brac Warren and Connor Zwetsch.
On To Arizona: The series with the Wildcats (23-8, 7-5) will match some of the Pac-12's best pitching against its most potent offense. Arizona leads the Pac-12 and is top-five nationally in hitting, runs and doubles. Oregon (5-4 Pac-12) leads the conference in strikeouts per nine innings and walks per nine, and is second in ERA and shutouts.
"It'll be a significant test," Horton said. "It'll be a (NCAA) regional type environment — they draw really well, and it will be warm. And they're really good, and well-coached. There'll be a lot of challenges for us."
As always, the Ducks are wary of Arizona's hard, fast infield, and the way it can play havoc on ground balls.
"Typically if you pitch well, you like your chances," Horton said. "We've been in that environment before where guys throw a good inning, and it ends up being a crooked number, based on the way the ball bounces."
Beyond The Boxscore: McCullough had his third three-hit game of the season, and second in five games. He is 9-of-15 during the Ducks' current five-game winning streak. … Stringer has yielded three earned runs in 13.2 innings over his last three starts. … Cooper Stiles entered with two on and one out in the sixth, and proceeded to record five straight outs.
