EUGENE, Ore. – Oregon got the potential tying and winning runs on base in the ninth inning but couldn't complete the comeback in a 4-3 Pac-12 Conference loss to Stanford on Friday night at PK Park.
How it Happened: David Peterson battled through seven innings, while giving up four earned runs on 10 hits, suffering his first loss since the season opener at Fresno State on Feb. 18. He struck out five batters without surrendering a walk.
Daniel Bakst got the Cardinal on the board in the first inning with a two-out RBI double to drive in Matt Winaker and make it 1-0.
Stanford (21-12, 6-7 Pac-12) struck for two more runs in the second inning, stretching the lead to 3-0. Brandon Wulff singled home a run before Winaker drove in another with a sacrifice fly to left field.
Gabe Matthews crushed a solo shot to lead off the bottom of the second inning for his second home run of the year, cutting it to 3-1.
The Cardinal added another run in the sixth inning with three consecutive one-out singles, stretching the lead to 4-1.
Oregon (23-11, 6-7 Pac-12) answered with a pair of runs in the seventh inning to cut the Stanford lead to 4-3. Jake Bennett delivered a run-scoring single to plate Ryne Nelson who led off the inning with a pinch-hit walk. Spencer Steer followed one batter later with an RBI single to score Kyle Kasser who also reached with a walk. Stanford's Duke Kinamon robbed Matthew Dyer of a base hit with a diving play at second base to end the inning and leave runners at second and third.
Peterson in the record books: Peterson moved into third place on Oregon's all-time career strikeouts list with 229, passing Tommy Thorpe (2012-14) … His 87 strikeouts for the season puts him in a tie for the sixth most in Oregon history with Thorpe (2013) … Peterson passed Jeff Gold (2011-14) for fourth all-time in career starts with 37.
Box Score Notes: Kasser recorded his team-best 14th multiple-hit game, going 3-for-4 with a double and a run scored … Steer finished 2-for-4 with a double, RBI and a walk … Cooper Stiles pitched two perfect innings of relief with two strikeouts to keep it a one-run game … The Ducks failed to capitalize on opportunities at the plate, leaving 10 runners on base while going 2-for-16 with runners on.
On Deck: The Ducks and Cardinal will play game two of the series tomorrow at 2 p.m. at PK Park with Matt Mercer (5-2, 2.47) going for Oregon and Andrew Summervile (5-1, 2.67) on the mound for Stanford.
