
Peterson named semifinalist for Dick Howser Trophy

Eugene, Ore. – Junior pitcher David Peterson has been named one of 25 semifinalists for the 2017 Dick Howser Trophy. The award is given to the top player in collegiate baseball and is presented by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association.  
 
The Ducks' lefty is 10-3 with a 2.29 ERA heading into this Friday's start at USC. Peterson has struck out an Oregon school record 122 hitters in 86.1 innings pitched while walking just 12. He is the only pitcher in the country to rank in the top six in four statistical categories. He is third in the country in strikeouts, third in victories, fourth in strikeout-to-walk ratio (10.17) and sixth in strikeouts per nine innings (12.72).
 
Peterson (Denver, Colo. / Regis Jesuit HS) has had a dominant season. He was named the NCBWA National Pitcher of the Month after finishing March with a 5-0 record and a 0.50 ERA. He allowed just four runs, two earned, on 28 hits in 36.1 innings pitched while striking out 57, walking two and allowing a .207 opponent batting average. Peterson had three games with double-digit strikeouts during the month with a then career-high 17 against Mississippi State on March 3, 14 the next week against Santa Clara and then 11 to wrap up March against Utah.
 
Oregon's ace has also has claimed three Pac-12 Conference Pitcher of the Week honors in 2017 and was named a Collegiate Baseball National Player of the Week three times. He was named the NCBWA Pitcher of the Week after he set a career-high, and Oregon record, striking out 20 in a 2-0 complete-game shutout of Arizona State on April 28. In that game he allowed just four hits while walking just one.
 
Peterson has six double-digit strikeout games during the season. In addition to the Arizona State, Mississippi State, Santa Clara, and Utah games, he fanned 11 vs. UC Irvine while walking none and had 10 strikeouts in a win at Washington State.
 
Finalists for the 31st Dick Howser Trophy will be announced on Friday, June 9. The 2017 award will be presented at TD Ameritrade Stadium in Omaha, the home of the College World Series, for the seventh year. The winner will be unveiled on MLB Network on Friday, June 16 and then a press conference with the winner will be held on Saturday, June 17.
