LOS ANGELES – Taylor Travess stole home in the top of the ninth inning to score the winning run and give Oregon a 3-2 win over USC on Sunday in Pac-12 Conference action at Dedeaux Field. The Ducks clinched the series win with the victory.
How it happened: Travess started the ninth inning with a bunt single, moved to second on an A.J. Balta sacrifice bunt and advanced to third on a Daniel Patzlaff ground out. Kyle Kasser walked to put runners on the corners with Jake Bennett batting. Bennett worked the count to 2-and-2 before Travess and Kasser executed the double steal to perfection. USC pitcher Austin Manning stepped off the rubber and fired the ball into the dirt at home as Travess slid home safely.
Three Ducks pitchers combined to keep Oregon in the game after the Ducks allowed 14 runs on Saturday. Cole Stringer allowed just two runs on five hits in six innings while striking out three and walking none. Brac Warren (1-0) got the win pitching two scoreless innings. He allowed just one hit and a walk while fanning two. Freshman Kenyon Yovan pitched a perfect ninth inning for his 14th save.
USC (20-31, 7-20 Pac-12) jumped out to an early lead with two runs in the second. Aldalberto Carrillo drove a two-run home run off the top of the scoreboard in right-center field.
Oregon (28-23, 11-16 Pac-12) tied it with a pair of runs in the fifth. Kyle Kasser singled to score Carson Breshears, who doubled with one out, to cut the lead in half. Kasser later came in to score on a Gabe Matthews sacrifice fly.
Box score notes: Kasser extended his hitting streak to 11 games, matching J.J. Altobelli (2011) for the eighth longest since baseball returned in 2009 … Bennett went 2-for-4 … Travess was 2-for-4 with a run scored.
On Deck: The Ducks wrap up a four-game swing through Southern California with a game at UC Riverside on Monday at noon.
