Ducks stumble at Portland
05/09/17 | Baseball
PORTLAND, Ore. – Oregon scored two late runs but it wasn't enough in a 3-2 non-conference loss at Portland at Joe Etzell Stadium on Tuesday night.
How it happened: Dutton Elske gave Portland an early 2-0 lead with a two-run home run to left center off Oregon starter Isaiah Carranza. The Pilots added a run in the bottom of the sixth off of reliever Ryne Nelson. Matt Kelly delivered a two-out double scoring Ryan Kim who walked with one out.
Oregon (26-18) had a couple of opportunities to put runs on the board. In the third, Gabe Matthews and Matthew Dyer led off the inning with back-to-back singles, but they were stranded on first and second. In the seventh, Tim Susnara walked and A.J. Balta doubled to put runners at second and third, but neither could score. Susnara was thrown out at home on a comebacker, and Balta was stranded at third when Kyle Kasser grounded out to end the inning.
The Ducks finally put runs on the board in the eighth. Spencer Steer scored on a Matthew Dyer groundout and then Susnara drove in Matthews with a single to left field to cut the lead to 3-2.
Box score notes: A.J. Balta picked up his third hit in four pinch hit at bats in Oregon's last four games … Balta doubled in the seventh … Matthews went 2-for-3 with a walk … Eight Oregon pitchers combined for 12 strikeouts … Carranza (2-3) took the loss allowing two runs on four hits in two innings pitched … The loss was the first by an Oregon team at Joe Etzell Field since baseball returned in 2009.
On Deck: The Ducks return home to host No. 1 Oregon State in a three-game series that starts Thursday at 6 p.m. at PK Park.
