MADISON, Wis – The Oregon women's golf team fell to Wisconsin in the semifinals of match play on Monday at the East and West Match Play, 4-1.
The Ducks will face Ohio State in the third-place match on Tuesday morning to round out the tournament at University Ridge Golf Course.
How It Happened: After Oregon shot 3-under in stroke play on Monday to take the number one seed in match play, the Ducks faced off with Wisconsin for the second straight year after falling in the finals last year.
Freshman Alexis Phadungmartvorakul, after a tremendous start to her colligate career yesterday in stroke play with a third-place finish, picked up the lone win of the day for the Ducks. Phadungmartvorakul led nearly the whole match against Gabby Curtis to put a point on the board winning seven holes to take the victory, 3&1.
Junior Petra Salko played well throughout the day and took her match against Jessica Reinecke into six extra holes, but ultimately fell to Reinecke with a bogey on the 24th hole.
Amy Matsuoka was paired up against Lexi Harkins, putting up a fight against a player who was tied for 21st in stroke play but lost, 4&2. Kathleen Scavo who was tied for first in stroke play at 7-under faced Becky Klongland, who was also tied for 21st in stroke play, with Klongland taking a 2&1 win. Kelsey Ulep battled Aya Johnson, but Johnson came out on top, 3&2.
What It Means: Despite the loss, the Ducks gained good experience competing in the match play format that they would see at the NCAA Championships.
Quotable: Ria Scott, Head Coach
On the match…
"We had a pretty solid day today. Wisconsin just played really well. We knew we had a tough match ahead of us with them on their home golf course. We are continuing to learn more about this course, and this lineup in match play. We have been very competitive with Ohio State in the past, and anticipate another great match tomorrow."
Up Next: Oregon will face Ohio State on day three of the East and West Match Play in the third-place match.
