Xiong to play in Farmers Insurance Open

Oregon sophomore Norman Xiong will make his first start in a PGA Tour event at the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines Golf Club in San Diego beginning Thursday.
Xiong received a sponsor's exemption to play in the event and is the only amateur in the field. He is the third UO golfer to play in a PGA Tour event while still at Oregon under coach Casey Martin, joining Thomas Lim, Daniel Miernicki and Eugene Wong.
Last summer, Xiong played in some of the most prestigious amateur events in the world, winning the Western Amateur and competing for the United States in the Palmer Cup and Walker Cup.
He got off to a tremendous start during the fall season, sharing medalist honors at the Rod Myers Invitational in September before winning in dramatic fashion at the Nike Collegiate Invitational a month later.
Xiong will get his week underway on Thursday at 11 a.m. Pacific. Golf Channel and CBS will have live coverage of the tournament which begins Thursday and runs through Sunday. Former Oregon golfers and current PGA Tour members Ben Crane and Aaron Wise are also in the field.
