Wise Named PGA Tour Rookie of the Year
10/29/18 | Men's Golf
Former Oregon golfer Aaron Wise was selected as the PGA Tour's Rookie of the Year Tuesday, becoming the first Duck alum to claim the yearly award and the first former Pac-12 golfer to win it since Tiger Woods in 1996.
Wise got his first win on tour in May at the AT&T Byron Nelson with a three-shot victory two weeks after a runner-up finish at the Wells Fargo Championship. He came in 24th in the FedEx Cup Standings, highlighted by four top 10 finishes, and was the only rookie to qualify for The Tour Championship in the final week of the season.
"It's pretty amazing," said head coach Casey Martin. "He's a hard worker and a smart worker, and every year he just chips away and gets better and better. It's just the tip of the iceberg for him right now and I think he's going to have a very long and fruitful career."
The 2016 NCAA Individual Champion earned his PGA Tour Card by finishing in the top 25 of the Web.com Tour's regular season money list in 2017 and in the top five of the Mackenzie Tour's money list in 2016. Wise won once on each tour, claiming the Syncrude Oil Championship on the Mackenzie Tour in 2016 and the Air Capital Classic on the Web.com Tour in 2017.
In addition to winning the individual national title in 2016, Wise helped lead the Ducks to their first ever NCAA Title and was named a PING First-Team All-American. His five career collegiate wins are second-most in program history and his 69.80 scoring average is the second-best all-time at Oregon.
