Ducks Battle Tough Conditions to Finish Second at Paintbrush Invitational
10/09/18 | Men's Golf
PARKER, Colo. – For the second straight day, Oregon battled through the cold and snow to shoot even par in the final round and finish second at the Paintbrush Invitational at Colorado Golf Club Tuesday. Ryan Gronlund came in fourth at 4 under to lead the way for the Ducks who finished 14 over for the tournament.
How it Happened: Gronlund bogeyed his second hole of the day – the par-4 third – but bounced right back with a birdie at the fifth. He dropped a shot at hole 10 but made three birdies in a four-hole stretch from holes 13 to 16 to get to 2 under for the round. A bogey the par-3 17th followed by a pair of closing pars put him back at 1 under.
Donald Kay shot an even-par 72 to finish tied for 32nd overall at 11 over. He got off to a shaky start, making just one birdie and five bogeys in his first 13 holes, but caught fire down the stretch, making three birdies in his final five holes to get back to even par.
Edwin Yi put together an even-par 72 round of his own, shooting a 36 going out with a birdie and a bogey to go with seven pars. He stumbled with a double bogey at the difficult par-4 12th but birdied two of his last three holes to get back to even.
Sam Foust shot a 1-over 73 to finish tied for 12th – the best finish of his career – at 3 over playing as an individual. Craig Ronne also turned in a 1-over 73 and Tom Gueant shot a 6-over 78.
Colorado won the team title at 6 over while the Rams' Oscar Teiffel took home medalist honors with a three-shot win at 10 under.
Quotable: Head coach Casey Martin
"It was a grind. It was super cold and it snowed most of the time. I am happy that my guys battled and hung in there. But we need to putt better if we are going to be a good team."
