Ducks Halt Phoenix's Rise
11/20/18 | Men's Basketball
Green Bay mounted a second-half comeback but the Oregon men held on for an 83-72 victory on Tuesday night.
EUGENE, Ore. — Bol Bol scored 21 points and grabbed nine rebounds, and Payton Pritchard added 18 points to help the No. 21 Oregon men's basketball team hold off visiting Green Bay, 83-72, before 6,569 fans in Matthew Knight Arena on Tuesday.
The Ducks (4-1) led by as much as 17 in the second half but went cold from the field down the stretch. The Phoenix made 8-of-10 shots late in the game to close within four at 74-70 before Oregon pulled away with late free-throw shooting.
"Our conditioning definitely has to improve," UO coach Dana Altman said. "Our intensity in the second half … (there was a) big difference defensively."
How It Happened: Bol scored six early points as Oregon jumped out to a 9-3 lead, and his baseline jumper capped an 8-0 run that made it 19-8. But that was the Ducks' last field goal for more than six minutes, until Will Richardson scored to put the UO men up 26-19 late in the first half. Bol then scored seven straight UO points to put the Ducks up 35-24, and Victor Bailey Jr. hit a three-pointer just before halftime that gave Oregon a 38-29 lead at the break.
UO coach Dana Altman called timeout after three straight Oregon turnovers early in the second half, and whatever his message, it got through. Pritchard hit a three-pointer on the Ducks' next possession, then another two possessions later, and Bol sunk a hook shot for a 48-35 lead. Abu Kigab grabbed offensive rebounds and put them back on consecutive possessions for a 56-39 advantage, Oregon's biggest of the night.
But after another three by Pritchard put the Ducks ahead 63-51, they went cold while the Phoenix got hot. JayQuan McCloud hit three-pointers on back-to-back possessions for Green Bay, and a three by Sandy Cohen III capped the 8-of-10 shooting streak by the visitors to get them within 74-70. There was still 2:02 left at that point, but Green Bay scored only once more, on two free throws, while Oregon went 7-of-8 from the line in the final minute.
"We've got a lot to work on; we all know that," Kigab said. "We've just gotta get back in the gym and get better."
Who Stood Out: Bol scored his 21 points on 8-of-12 shooting, and Pritchard had six rebounds and five assists to go along with his 18 points. Kigab had three of Oregon's four offensive rebounds to provide some timely plays down low, and freshman guard Will Richardson hinted at his playmaking potential with a season-high 10 points and two assists. He and Kenny Wooten each made eight free throws, and Wooten blocked four shots.

What It Means: The Ducks went 3-1 in the 2K Empire Classic, winning both of their campus round games and splitting two in New York City.
Notable: Wooten surpassed 100 career blocks, becoming the fourth UO player all-time to do so after Blair Rasmussen, Chris Boucher and Jordan Bell. … Green Bay was called for twice as many fouls as Oregon, 28 to 14. The Ducks went 33-of-42 from the line, and the Phoenix was 9-of-18. … Altman said Bol's 33 minutes were a few more than the freshman is ready to provide on a game to game basis at this point. … The Ducks have held all five opponents under 40 percent shooting, and have blocked at least six shots in all five.
Up Next: Following a few days off over the Thanksgiving holiday, the Ducks return to action Monday at home against Texas Southern (8 p.m., Pac-12).
