02/20/18 | Men's Golf
Oregon made a back nine push led by Norman Xiong's six birdies to move into a tie for the lead with No. 1 Oklahoma State.
LA QUINTA, Calif. – Oregon used a strong back nine push to grab a share of the lead after round one of The Prestige at the PGA West Greg Norman Course on Tuesday. Norman Xiong is one shot off the individual lead after shooting a 3-under 68 to propel the Ducks to a 1-under 283 as a team.
How it Happened: Xiong caught fire on the back nine, making five consecutive birdies on holes 11 through 15 to bounce back from a 3-over 38 on the front nine. He closed with a birdie at the last to finish off a 6-under 30 on the second nine.
Donald Kay continued his great start to the spring with a steady 1-under par round of 70. The freshman went out in 1-over 36 before making three birdies in a five-hole stretch from 12 to 16 to get to 2 under. A bogey at the last dropped him back to 1 under and in a tie for ninth individually.
Edwin Yi fired a 1-over par 72 to sit in a tie for 17th in the individual race, shooting a 1-over 36 going out and an even-par 36 on the back nine. Ryan Gronlund and Kevin Geniza both turned in rounds of 2-over 73 to round out the scoring for the Ducks.
Oregon went 7-under par as a team on the back nine to move into a tie atop the leaderboard after being in ninth after the front nine.
What it Means: The Ducks will have an opportunity to turn some heads as they are tied for the lead with No. 1 Oklahoma State and will be paired with the Cowboys in the final round. Oregon is looking for their first team win of the season and their first since last year's Pac-12 Championship.
Quotable: Head coach Casey Martin:
"We had a great finish today. Norman turned it on and Donald Kay has been terrific for us. Exciting to have a chance tomorrow against the top team in the country."
