Mercer shuts down FAU
03/02/18 | Baseball
Eugene, Ore. – Oregon starter Matt Mercer outdueled FAU starter Jake Miednik to give the Ducks a 2-1 win Friday night at PK Park.
How it happened: Mercer (2-1) held the Owls scoreless through seven innings and left the game with a 2-0 lead after allowing a leadoff single in the top of the eighth. The hit was just the third off Mercer, who struck out a season-high six while walking three.
Miednik (2-1) was almost as good for the Owls (7-2). Miednik, who fanned 14 in his last start, allowed just two runs on six hits while throwing a complete-game eight innings with four strikeouts. He was able to get out of a jam in the second inning when Oregon put runners on the corners with two outs after FAU right fielder David Miranda dropped a fly ball.
The Ducks (6-2) were finally able to get on the board against Miednik in the fourth inning. Junior Jakob Goldfarb delivered a two-out, RBI single up the middle scoring Spencer Steer, who singled to lead off the inning.
Oregon added to the lead in the seventh. Sophomore Ryne Nelson led off the inning with a walk, moved to second on a wild pitch, advanced to third on a fly ball to right field and scored on a wild pitch to make it 2-0.
FAU responded with a run in the eighth. After Cody Wilson singled to end Mercer's night, Andru Summerall doubled off Oregon reliever Parker Kelly to cut the lead to one with no outs. Kelly got out of the inning without allowing another run while stranding runners at second and third.
Kenyon Yovan pitched around a pair of walks in the ninth to pick up his third save of the season.
Duck notes: Mercer eclipsed the 100 career strikeout mark finishing the game with 104 … The win was the 10th of his career, while he made his 23rd career start (ninth most in Oregon history) … Yovan's save was the 18th of his career, two ahead of Stephen Nogosek (2014-16) … Senior Kyle Kasser had his streak of reaching base snapped at 32 games … Sophomore Gabe Matthews has reached base in all eight games in 2018.
On deck: Oregon and FAU will play game two of their four game series on Saturday at 2 p.m. Cole Stringer (0-1, 4.66) will take the mound for Oregon, while Kyle Marman (2-0, 0.71) pitches for FAU.
