Three Ducks shot under par to help to Oregon women's golf team shoot a 7-under 281 in the second round of the Ping ASU Invitational
TEMPE, Ariz. – The Oregon women's golf team had a phenomenal second day at the Ping ASU Invitational on Saturday, as three Ducks shot under par to lead the Ducks to a 7-under 281 at the ASU Karsten Gold Course.
Oregon's 7-under 281 ties for the fourth-lowest single-round score in program history, and it propelled the Ducks into fifth place (+2) in a very talented field entering Sunday's final round. UO's 281 was the best score in the field on Saturday, and it marked a 16-stroke improvement from round one. No. 17 Oklahoma State leads the field at 7-under par.
How it Happened: Junior Kathleen Scavo and sophomore Amy Matsuoka had terrific performances for Oregon, with both Ducks finishing with a 3-under 69 . Scavo carded three birdies and did not have a bogey all day, while Matsuoka had four birdies. Matsuoka's performance moved her into the top 10 on the individual leaderboard (-2, T9), while Scavo moved up to 15th (E).Junior Petra Salko continued to be a steady hand for the Ducks this weekend, shooting a 2-under 70 after an even-par 72 on Friday. Salko recorded three birdies to put her at 2 under and tied with Matsuoka in ninth overall, just three strokes back of individual leader Emma Broze (Oklahoma State).
Freshman Madi Daniel found her rhythm and shot 1 over on the day, improving by four strokes from round one to complete the counting scores for UO. Freshman Alexis Phadungmartvorakul also improved her score from day one, shooting 1 under on the back nine to record a score of 2 over on the day.
Senior Kelsey Ulep, competing as an individual, carded an eagle on her 11th hole of the day, and shot 4 over on the round.
What it Means: The Ducks' impressive second round vaulted them ahead of five top-50 teams in the standings, including defending NCAA champion and No. 8 ranked Arizona State. Matsuoka, Salko and Scavo also moved themselves into the thick of the individual race, giving the Ducks plenty to play for in Sunday's final round.
