TEMPE, Ariz. - Junior Kathleen Scavo earned a top-15 finish and freshman Alexis Phadungmartvorakul fired a 2-under 70 on Sunday as the Oregon women's golf team wrapped up the Ping ASU Invitational at the ASU Karsten Golf Course.
After carding the lowest round of the day with a 7-under 281 in Saturday's second round, the Ducks were not as sharp on Sunday. Oregon shot 15 over to finish the three-day tournament at 17 over and in a tie for seventh in the 14-team field. No. 15 Arizona won the team title at 12 under.
How it Happened: Scavo, who dipped into the 60s for the sixth time this season on Saturday with a 3-under 69, shot a 1-over 73 Sunday to finish 1 over and tied for 14th. The Benicia, Calif., native earned her second top-15 finish of the season and fourth in the top 20.
Phadungmartvorakul shot better than par for the fourth time this year to lead the Ducks in the final round, and the freshman improved in all three rounds in Tempe to finish at 7 over.
Petra Salko was terrific in the first two rounds and entered Sunday at 2 under, but she struggled on the front nine and was hurt by a late triple bogey while shooting 7 over. Salko was Oregon's second overall finisher at 5 over, tied for 29th.
Sophomore Amy Matsuoka labored through the front nine as well on Sunday after starting the day at 2 under, finishing 7 over and tied with Phadungmartvorakul in 33rd. Freshman Madi Daniel wrapped up the weekend at 19 over, highlighted by a 1-over 73 on Saturday.
What it Means: The Ducks showed on Saturday that they can go low with some of the best teams in the nation, but will look for improved consistency as they get set for their final spring tournament before the start of postseason play.
Quotable: Ria Scott, Head Coach
"We put ourselves in position for a great finish today but could not get the job done. Our golf swings did not change overnight, so we need to look at what we did in the process that was different frm yesterday to today. Every single player on our team had bright moments this week and we still believe we are trending in the right direction."
Notable: Scavo led the tournament with 41 total made pars … UO's 281 on Saturday was the third-lowest single-round score of the weekend … Oregon finished ahead of three ranked teams, including No. 18 Colorado … Georgia's Jillian Hollis won the individual title at 9 under … Senior Kelsey Ulep carded a 78 and 76 in the first two rounds as an individual, her first appearance of the spring, but did not compete on Sunday.
