03/29/18 | Men's Golf
SAN FRANCISCO – Oregon shot 5 under in the opening round of The Goodwin at TPC Harding Park Thursday to sit in a tie for third place. Norman Xiong shot a 6-under 65 and is in second place while Ryan Gronlund joined him in the top 10 with a 2-under 69 and is tied for 10th.
How it Happened: Xiong picked up right where he left off after winning the Duck Invitational on Tuesday making birdie on his opening hole. Starting his day on the back nine, he made the turn at 2 under after making three birdies and a bogey. Xiong shot 4 under on the front nine, closing strong with back-to-back birdies on holes seven and eight to complete his opening round 65.
Gronlund had a relatively steady opening nine, making a bogey and eight pars to shoot a 1-over 36 on the back nine. He caught fire after making the turn with three straight birdies to get to 2 under. Gronlund made another birdie on the par-4 fifth hole to reach 3 under but gave the shot back on hole seven.
Freshman Thomas Mulligan turned in a strong, steady round of even-par 71. He bogeyed the par-3 11th, his second hole of the day, but made seven straight pars before making birdie on hole one to get back to level par.
The Ducks are two shots behind round one leader and host Stanford which shot 7 under while Xiong is a shot behind individual leader Jeffrey Swegle of Stanford.
