SEATTLE – The Oregon women's golf team shot a 7-over 295 on Tuesday behind a strong showing by sophomore Amy Matsuoka to close out the Pac-12 Championships at the Broadmoor Golf Course.
Oregon's 7 over was the fourth-best team score of the day, allowing Oregon to jump up two spots in the field and finish tied for eighth in the three-day conference championship. No. 1 UCLA claimed the team title for the second year in a row with a 4 under performance. UCLA also boasted the individual champion in Patty Tavatanakit, who defeated Lilia Vu in a one-hole playoff after the two tied at 8 under.
How it Happened: The Ducks seemed to get more comfortable during each round of the Pac-12 Championships, improving their team score in each day and finishing with their best showing in the final round.
Matsuoka, who led Oregon at 1 over on Monday, carded three birdies on the back nine and shot even on the front nine to lead the Ducks with a 2 under performance. Matsuoka tied for the most birdies throughout the tournament with 37. The sophomore's strong final round put her at 5 over overall, giving Matsuoka her best finish of the year in a tie for 20th overall.
After a tough first round, freshman Madi Daniel came to life in the latter part of the tournament. After firing a 2-over 74 in the second round, Daniel recorded three birdies and shot even on the back nine to finish the third round with a 1-over 73. Daniel climbed 15 places on the individual leaderboard from her position after the first round to finish tied for 40th at 14 over.
Junior Petra Salko played pretty steady over the duration of the tournament. Salko notched two birdies in the final 18 holes of play to finish at 3 over on the round and 10 over for the tournament, finishing 30th overall.
Junior Kathleen Scavo followed closely behind Salko in a tie for 31st with an overall score of 11 over after shooting 5 over in the final round.
Sophomore Alexis Phadungmartvorakul's final round performance was highlighted by an eagle on the 13th hole, but a series of bogeys put her at 6 over for the round and 17 over for the tournament.
What it Means: The Ducks showed moments of greatness amongst a talented field in a high-pressure environment, but continue to look for consistency throughout an entire tournament. Playing in situations like this will help the Ducks as their young roster continues to develop moving forward. The Ducks will now wait to see if they are awarded a bid to the NCAA Regional Championship, which they appear to be on the bubble for.
Quotable: Ria Scott, Head Coach
"We are very proud of the fight our team showed out there today, and the adjustments they made based on their play the previous two days. They were extremely professional in their approach to this event and have made a lot of progress this spring. We are especially pleased with the toughness that Petra showed. She was ill all week, never complained an ounce, and stayed strong. Amy and Madi really came through when we needed them most, over the last two rounds."
