Led by under-par performances from Kathleen Scavo and Amy Matsuoka, the Oregon women’s golf team shot 1 under in the first round of the San Francisco NCAA Regional on Monday
SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – Led by under-par performances from Kathleen Scavo and Amy Matsuoka, the Oregon women's golf team got the San Francisco NCAA Regional off to a strong start on Monday with a 1-under 287 in the first round at TCP Harding Park.
How it Happened: The Ducks played consistent golf throughout the first round, shooting 1 under as a team to kick off their 11th straight NCAA Regional appearance. UO is currently tied for fourth place with Louisville and host Stanford, while UCLA leads the field at 8 under. The top six teams in the field after three rounds will advance to the NCAA Championships (May 18-23) in Stillwater, Okla.
Scavo, competing in the third NCAA Regional of her career, set the tone for the Ducks with a 2-under 70, marking her 10th round of the season of par or better. The junior carded three birdies on the back nine, four in total, and is currently tied for fifth place overall heading into the second round.
After finishing in the top 20 at the Pac-12 Championships, sophomore Amy Matsuoka opened her first NCAA Regional with an impressive 1-under 71. Matsuoka also carded four birdies on the day, tying for the sixth-most birdies in the tournament so far.
Freshman Alexis Phadungmartvorakul also had an impressive NCAA Regional debut. The Taft, Calif., native made par on 16 of her 18 holes during the first round, tying for the most pars among the field. Phadungmartvorakul also dropped in one birdie on the back nine to finish the day with an even-par 70.
After recording a double bogey on her second hole of the day, junior Petra Salko recovered nicely, carding three birdies to finish the round with a 2-over 74.
Freshman Madi Daniel rounded out the lineup with an 8 over performance.
Quotable: Ria Scott, Head Coach
"I'm really proud of every single one of them today. Everyone has brought a heightened level of professionalism to their practice and play over the past few weeks; and I think it's showing. They have a true desire and belief in themselves – and each other."
What it Means: Scavo said prior to the start of the NCAA Regional that she thinks the Ducks raise their game in the postseason as well as any team in the nation. She and the Ducks backed up that statement in the first round, and will look to carry that consistent play into the next two rounds as Oregon tries to secure its third consecutive trip to the NCAA Championships.
Oregon Results:
T4. Oregon - 287
T5. Kathleen Scavo - 70
T10. Amy Matsuoka - 71
T25. Alexis Phadungmartvorakul - 72
T42. Petra Salko - 74
