Ducks Blank Utah In First Round Of The Pac-12 Tournament
04/25/18 | Women's Tennis
OJAI, Calif. – The Oregon women's tennis team dominated the first round of the Pac-12 Tournament Wednesday afternoon, sweeping Utah 4-0 at the Ojai Valley Athletic Club.
How it Happened: The Ducks (15-8, 5-5) looked a little shaky early on in doubles play with Alyssa Tobita and Rifanty Kahfiani falling behind 3-0 at the No. 2 spot.
The Duck duo ripped off the next four games to take a 4-3 lead, and give UO the edge on all three courts. The freshman pair of Julia Lilien and Paiton Wagner went on to clinch the point for Oregon with a duplicate 6-3 win from the No. 3 spot.
UO continued to roll in singles play picking up first set wins on all six courts.
Reminiscent of their first meeting this season, Tobita and No. 122 Alexia Petrovic battled in their opening set with Tobita eventually knotting the match at 6-6. The Mililani, Hawaii native eventually pulled out the tiebreaker win 7-6(4).
As Tobita closed out her first set, junior Daniela Nasser gave UO a 2-0 lead, defeating Utah's Taylor Calton, 6-1, 6-2, almost simultaneously.
With the remaining four Ducks on the verge of closing out their second sets, it once again became a race to see who would clinch first.
Wagner was first, picking up a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Victoria Robertson at the No. 6 spot with Julia Eshet following in her footsteps less than a minute later with a 6-2, 6-4 win from the No. 5 position.
Notable: The win was Oregon's sixth shutout victory, and third straight, of the season … Eshet's win at the No. 5 spot was her first of the year from that position.
Up Next: The Ducks head into the quarterfinals to take on No. 2 seed UCLA Thursday at 2 p.m. PT.
