Yi, Xiong Pace Ducks in Round One of Western Intercollegiate

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. – Oregon closed strong in the opening round of the Western Intercollegiate to shoot 3 over and sit in fourth place Saturday at Pasatiempo Golf Club. Edwin Yi shot a career-low 4-under 66 to earn a share of the lead while Norman Xiong is tied for ninth.
Round two was suspended due to darkness with the Ducks at 10 over for the tournament. The second round will be completed Sunday morning with the final round to follow.
How it Happened: Yi jumped under par from the get-go with a birdie on the first hole but gave the shot right back with a bogey at two. He caught fire before making the turn as he birdied three of his final four holes on the front nine to go out in 3-under 32. After a bogey at the 12th hole, he made birdie on two of his last three holes to shoot a 1-under 34 coming in.
Xiong started a bit slow, bogeying two of his first three holes to drop to 2 over but began to right the ship with a birdie on the par-5 ninth hole. He shot a bogey-free 3-under 32 on the back nine to shoot a 2-under 68.
Ryan Gronlund also got off to a rough start, double bogeying the first hole, but bounced back with a birdie on the par-3 third hole. He shot a 1-over 36 on the opening nine, but made four birdies and two bogeys on the back nine to shoot a 1-under 69.
Kevin Geniza and Donald Kay both shot a 5-over 75 to score for the Ducks while Thomas Mulligan turned in a 7-over 77.

Notable: Xiong has now shot under par in 18 of his 25 rounds this season … He also recorded his fifth straight round in the 60s and 15th this season … Yi shot in the 60s for the second time this year and for the first time since he shot 68 in the second round of the Trinity Forest Invitational in September … Gronlund turned in his eighth sub-70 round of the season.
