Xiong Shoots 68, Ducks in Sixth After Round One
05/14/18 | Men's Golf
STOCKTON, Calif. – Oregon sits in sixth place after shooting a 1-over 289 in the opening round of the NCAA Stockton Regional Monday at The Reserve at Spanos Park. Sophomore Norman Xiong is tied for fourth individually after shooting 4 under to lead the way for the Ducks.
How it Happened: Xiong stumbled out of the gates, making his only bogey of the day on the par-4 10th hole. He bounced back with consecutive birdies at 11 and 12 before making eagle on the par-5 16th hole to shoot 3 under on the back nine to start his day. Xiong shot a 1-under 35 on the front nine, his only birdie coming at the par-3 fourth hole to finish with a 68.
Ryan Gronlund delivered a steady performance on the way to an even-par 72. He birdied his second hole of the day, the par-5 11th hole, but dropped shots at 12 and 17 to card a 1-over 37 on his opening nine. Gronlund birdied the par-5 sixth hole while making eight pars on the front nine to shoot 1 under.
Kevin Geniza shot a 2-over 38 on the back nine but fired an even-par 36 to finish with a 2-over 74. A triple bogey by Edwin Yi at the par-4 17th hole proved to be costly for his round as he shot a 3-over 75.
The Ducks are four shots behind fifth-place Stanford while Iowa State holds the round one lead at 10 under. The top five teams in each regional advance to NCAA Championships.
