Tobita Falls In NCAA Tournament Opener

Winston-Salem, N.C. – Senior Alyssa Tobita closed out her final season with the Oregon women's tennis team Wednesday morning, falling to No. 19 Carla Touly, 6-1, 6-3, in the first round of the NCAA Individual Championships.

Tobita fell behind early as Touly took a 5-0 lead in the opening set. The Mililani, Hawaii native prevented the first set shutout by winning the next game, but could not overcome the deficit.

In the second set, Tobita started off strong taking a 2-1 lead at the first break, but Touly came back to win the next two games, and four of the next five, to win the match.

A small bump on a tremendous senior season that included earning UO's first NCAA Individual Championship berth since 2006, her first career victories at the No. 1 position and a second straight all-Pac-12 second team selection, Tobita finishes the year 18-12 overall in singles play.

"Alyssa can be extremely proud of her career at Oregon," said head coach Alison Silverio. "She has broken down many barriers and has been a pioneer for our program's success. The future is bright for this special young lady. It has been an honor and a privilege to be a part of her journey."
